Mercutios Dreaming : The Killing of a Chinese Actor

2011, 20 minutes

A young chinese actor struggles to make it in the industry

Mercutio’s Dreaming is a tragic-comic satire telling the tale of Lawrence Yang, a British born Chinese would be Shakesperean actor, and his travails with an industry that see him only as an “Oriental”. In 15 scenes we follow our protagonist from his drama school showcase performing his “dream role”, Mercutio’s “Queen Mab” speech from Romeo & Juliet, through a series of hilarious and heartbreaking encounters with a variety of colourful yet true to life characters; phlegmatic, larger than life Eric Woo who runs his own cattle-call theatrical agency specialising in “Orientals”, a hapless group of East Asian “background artistes” on a “Mishima Deodorant” commercial, self-styled “Oriental Actress” Vicky Chen and award-winning theatre director Tobias Morrison.
