It is the story of Emlyn, a young single mother living alone in the woods with her only son, Robert, and her attempts to protect him from the violence of war and from growing up to be a soldier like his father. All of her hard work goes to pot one fateful evening when Matthew, a man who calls himself a soldier and an officer, finds her cottage while she isn't home. She must try to steer him away, whatever the cost, if she wants to protect Robert from the threat that this soldier brings with him.
