A story of love that is thwarted by desire for material gain.
The story centres on a landed family in the 18th century. The father of the family dies and his widow, finds to her horror that they have been left almost without a penny. She uses the situation to force her only son Edward to make a choice. Having discovered that Edward is involved in a secret relationship with his manservant, she forcees him to choose between this love affair and a marriage with the rich hieress Eliza. The film was made in a National Trust property and is most skilfully done, as well as being visually quite stunning.
