Pythium

2018, 11 minutes

A young muslim returns home after being detained by police without charge.

PYTHIUM is a family drama that explores some of the unexpected conditions that can lead to radicalisation. When violent extremism takes place the media often blames religion, but extensive studies reveal far more complex reasons behind these actions. Many ISIS converts are not from impoverished backgrounds or ‘broken homes’. Often they are well educated, without history of violence, and the ideas and feelings draw them in to such a destructive ideology are not dissimilar to that felt by all young people - desire for adventure and a sense of identity, and the idealism of youth, a yearning to transcend their circumstances.
