Sea Fruit

2020, 15 minutes

British-Chinese student Jian secretly drops out of university and hides from the world by living in his car and scraping a living as a minicab driver. But when his Mum calls to ask where he is, Jian must face up to his lies...

The heart of this film is a drama about someone learning to help themselves, about a character realising he is less alone than he thinks. But I also want to mix in elements of a trhiller to this story, drawing off the tension throughout the film that something bad may happen to Jian. The climax of the film is based off a twist where an unruly passenger unexpectly decides to help Jian but this should also feel like a test for the character. Is this man genuine? Is Jian really strong enough to trust someone after all the loneliness he's been suffering from? And for this to land, it's important that in the run up to the twist Jian's world feels full of tension and suspicion...
