Hull, Summer 1977.

Hull, Summer 1977. Derek Springfields an 18-year-old misfit, plucked out of dockside Hessle Road 5 years earlier on a scholarship to Public School and now back home. He's waiting for his Oxbridge results that could see him escape to University. Its awkward for the brainy lad and embarrassing for his working class family: his feckless docker dad, no-nonsense mum and two older brothers one a football hopeful and the other a distinctly dodgy acquirer of flash consumer goods. Derek kills time by walking a no-chance greyhound, Slapper, and loving out-of-his league Chrissie from afar. But under Dereks loving care Slapper gets faster - so fast shes stolen for her racing potential, and Derek feels nothing will ever go right. But Chrissie gets the local community to keep watch and Slapper does escape from her furious captors at an illegal flapper track. Exhausted, she somehow finds her way to Hessle Road, is reunited with Derek and secretly nursed back to fitness in his bedroom. In an exciting climax Derek, Chrissie and Slapper, all in disguise, go to race at a proper dog track. The dognappers and all the Springfields converge on the stadium. Its also the day Dereks results are due.
