Hunger Games meets The Leftovers

In an alternate universe, brain energy is what makes the world go round. A company called The Institute - who have brain stations around the world; where they power and distribute out brain energy to power streetlights, shops and banks - rule the world. They recruit people once a year to freely give up their lives, to become “heroes” who keep the world powered. In this world, a seemingly normal girl called Kat is about to see her younger sister, Emily, be recruited by The Institute. This brings delight to Kat as she admires the Institute like everyone else, and wants her sister to join. And since she doesn’t have enough brainpower to look after her by herself, she believes Emily will have a better life in The Institute. Things soon change however as Kat realizes that she isn’t as brain dead as she thought.
