The outside pressures a Thatcher's mining strikes bares down on a marriage as Sam returns to work
The film is set in a small mining town in northern Britain during the mid 1980's. Sam has decided that he can no longer continue with the strike and will return to work. The film begins on the morning of Sam's return to work. His decision has had a great impact upon their relationship for both of them are scared of its devastating moral implications and the possible public repercussions. Sam and Elizabeth proceed through their old morning routine but their troubles manifest themselves through the collapse of their routine and the detachment and awkwardness of their behaviour towards each other.
