Hortensio has made a bet with Petruchio that he can't make Katherine, the most unpopular and alternative girl in the University his wife. Petruchio, being the kind of guy he is, or rather, the kind of guy everyone else thinks he is takes that bet. The following scene is a classic cat and mouse as Petruchio tries to "tame" Kate and win her over.
