After a family tragedy, a Jewish girl in the late 19th century takes a position as a Governess in a remote part of Scotland. She does not declare herself as Jewish. She embarks on an affair with the Master of the house, and takes an interest in the early development of photography alongside him. When the affair and her religion is discovered she returns to her sister in London and begins her own pioneering career as an early female photographer.
