The Last Superheroes

2013, 90 minutes

'The Last Superheroes is a joyful comedy-drama about breaking through the chains to find fulfilment and happiness.

The Last Superheroes is a feature film about a small group of superheroes from the north west who, after years of increasingly draconian human rights legislation, have been unable to work freely for too long. Most are not working in crime fighting at all. So, fed up, Carl Den and Stevo embark upon a journey of a lifetime. They hear of a contact in London who can offer them work and board and believe they have hit upon an incredible opportunity. After disguising themselves as just any normal civilians, they arrive in the Big Smoke and discover love, sex and spiritual freedom. Unfortunately, little do they know how superheroes in the city have been entirely wiped out by a mayor who sees them as part of the reasons for, and not solution to, London's crime problems. Notes from the director. 'The Last Superheroes is a joyful comedy-drama about breaking through the chains to find fulfilment and happiness. The important thing about Carl and his friends is not that they’re superheroes, (this only highlights their disconnection with the world) but that they are able to find joy in things we often take for granted, friendship, love, shared experiences, freedom. What I love and find so interesting about Carl, Den and Stevo is that they display all the wonderful traits of what it is to be human. As superheroes, their focus had always been on the image, the externals, their place in the world. And now, as ‘men’ they can start to look at the world from the inside out, maybe for the first time. It’s this that provides a lot of the comedy in the film, but it’s also what ultimately makes us fall in love with them and eager to share their journey.'
