The Safe House: A Decline of Ideas

2016, 55 minutes

British feature-length documentary about the lack of funding and closing of libraries in the UK.

Poet and filmmaker Greta Bellamacina has teamed up with journalist Davina Catt to document the history of British public libraries and their current threat of decline. Bellamacina and Catt chart the history of public libraries from their beginnings in 18th century Scottish mining villages to their mid-century height, right up to present day when the public library faces cuts and an uncertain future. Interviews with Stephen Fry, Irvine Welsh, Amma Asante, Zadie Smith, and John Cooper Clarke reveal the intimate importance of libraries in the creative lives of some of our best loved cultural figures. This inspiring documentary is a visual collage and a surprisingly moving love letter to the library.
