The Shrieking Pit

2016, 15 minutes

Dystopian sci-fi drama

Dystopian adaptation of the original North Norfolk Myth with the same name. In a dystopian world where men are sterilised at the age of 18 after giving their samples over to the government, births are controlled by the scientific genetic matching of couples. In this world sits Esme, who is mourning the loss of the love of her life, Jacob, who was killed whilst helping a stranger on the street. It comes as a cruel blow when she receives a letter from the government confirming their application to have a child, only to find that due to his death his sample will now be sent to the local Shrieking Pit on Craft Lane – a prison hospital where prosecuted women are forced into surrogacy, being pumped full of hormones to give birth to genetically selected children. Committing a crime is the only means of entry into the Shrieking Pit, but for Esme this is not enough. She needs the aid of someone on the inside, someone who can manipulate the data to make sure she receives Jacob’s sample, to make sure she births their child. This is all she has left of her husband and so she turns to her oldest friend Vicky. Vicky works in the labs in the Craft Lane Shrieking Pit, handling the samples and inputting the genetic data, giving her the perfect opportunity to help ensure Esme receives her husband’s sample. But if she is caught the price will be severe – admittance to the Shrieking Pit. With her mind already set on entering the Pit, Esme puts Vicky in a dangerous and conflicting situation.
