YOUNG, FIT & DYING: THE TRUTH ABOUT RUNNING

Young Fit and Dying: The Truth about Running investigates a spate of recent running deaths in young people and the effect of modern running practices on our bodies. Presenter Michael Dorgan questions whether recent marathon deaths were preventable, consults top scientific experts and runs a gruelling 8 marathons in 8 days from London to Brussels to test the true limits of the body. Michael, a recreational runner and filmmaker, is deeply concerned that every month a marathon runner dies, average age just 33. He investigates these deaths and sets out to find out why runners are dying and if he is putting his own health or life at risk by being fit. Articulate experts offer interesting insights into the benefits and risks of running, highlighting dangerous, in some cases widespread, practices, as well as powerful and surprising benefits. They warn of the potentially lethal effects of taking painkillers when running and using unregulated sports supplements. Asthma is addressed, with surprising results. New research on the relationship between exercise and both heart health and mental health is covered, as well as counter-intuitive answers on the effects on knees and joints. Michael’s punishing 220-mile challenge puts the science to the test. Only by attempting to complete this mammoth challenge will he learn the true effects of running and whether he has done any long-term damage to his body.
