Hi there,
I was just wondering im in a pickle! i have an agent interested but the agent im with is sole representation. Now i wanted this agent to concentrate on the auditions in the south and my agent to concentrate on the north but my agent isnt happy about that! can i ask for some advice as i am from the north but i need an agent who has the contacts in the north but also the same amount in the south. I didnt think there would be many agents with equal contacts which is why i think i need 2! Any feedback would be great!!!

This is precisely the situation I have. One agent in Scotland who knows what the score is up here and another in London doing the same down south.

Both agents need to know where their area of responsibility lies or your end up with duplicate submissions and both agents fighting over who submitted you when you get that all important role opposite Leonardo di Caprio.

It all depends how much work you are getting from the agent that demands sole representation. If they require sole representation and aren't actually getting you much decent work then the decision is pretty simple really.

Your agent is not your boss they are your business associate and, at the end of the day, it's your career and only you can make the decisions that really matter.

Discuss the situation with both agents and if one requires sole representation give them sole representation but territorially limited. You don't have to sign any contract until you are happy with it and all clauses are negotiable...if the aren't then the agent isn't trying to help you they are trying to help themselves.

Hey there Forbes!!
Cheers for the advice!! I just don't know what to do really as my current agent hasnt really got me any auditions in london and this other agent is so in with london casting agents its untrue! I dont want to totally loose my roots in the north so i need to find a northern agent who is willing to share me with another agent. I have contacted a few manchester based agents and they have come back sayin they are sole management and i was just wondering whether anybody knew of any manchester agents who aren't sole management??

It sad but true but the majority of the decent work is cast out of London...even the better known stuff filming up here in Scotland is cast by London based casting directors so my suggestion is to dump the Manchester agent and go for the London based one. If the contacts they have are as you described it won't be long before the paid work starts flowing your way and isn't that what we are all trying to achieve in the long term.

Most Manchester roles are advertised in Spotlight so you London agent will be able to submit you for these just as easily as the Manchester one would.

Regards and good luck,

Dear Joy

Your Manchester agent are very well thought off and looking at all the CV's of the actors they represent they are gaining work both in the north and south. However they are a very big agency and because of this I think they would find it difficult to remember too only put you forward for jobs in the North.
The London agent sounds very keen to represent you, so perhaps it may be time for a change. Though if you're going to stay living in Leeds you may find having many auditions in London very expensive. (Saver return Leeds to London is £71.50 auditions often come with only a days notice.)
So why not bites the bullet go with the London agent, and given that you have strong dance skills try living in London. The North is a brilliant place to live, but my advice as an old actor to a young actor is give London a go even if it's only for a year. Nearly all musicals are cast in London and most commercials have their recalls in London even if the first audition is in Manchester.

Hey Guys,
Thankyou so much for your comments!
The london agent has alot of contacts in the south and they are some damn good contacts but they dont get alot in the north! now as a northern lass is it wrong to just cut off the north?? Theres alot of work up here we have granada and yorkshire tv but then in the south you have the world of musical theatre which is what i love!
Should i got with this london agent or go through the whole search of finding a new agent? Do you think there is an agent out there who have amazing contacts in the north and the south???

Dear Joy

There are agents in Manchester such as Pemberton Associates, Narrow Rd, Amber Personal Management and David Daly Associates who have an office in London and Manchester, so they do not miss out on anything. Though if you look at their websites you will see that their actors have a lot of professional credits, or have trained at one of the accredited drama schools.
In the short term you need to build up the jobs on your CV then maybe go back and apply to on of these dual agents. So if the London agent is genuinely excited about representing you give it a go. If you have a Northern accent you will still be cast in the North no matter where your agent is.

Cheers

hi, I would be very careful about dropping your manchester agent as they have a very good rep up here. However i am based in manchester and have just got myself a London based agent only as she has good links to both north and south and was interested in me because im from manchester and she wanted a northern based actress. so maybe you would be better joining with a southern one who doesnt mind you living in the north.
Come on you northerners!!x

well the only way to find out what agents will or wont be interested is to write to them or email them, explain your situation, that you are based both in yorkshire and london and you are looking for someone who can represent you with contacts in both areas.
