Extras agency until agent?

Hi,

I've recently graduated and I am now starting to look for an agent, which has obviously not been very successful as of yet! Would anyone recommend signing with an extras agency whilst I build up my CV and then (hopefully!) sign with another agent?

Thanks

Kirsty

....and yet it still continues! Oh my God!

Such an out-pour of emotion and anger seems to mask perhaps a little too much insecurity on your part Forbes!

I have never expressed an opinion regarding whether or not I agree with Dazzler's comments (who by the way is not 'my friend' as you stated), however, the more this tiresome debate continues on the pros and cons of extra work (which for the final time people should be conducted on the dedicated EXTRAS site) I am now starting to agree with him entirely. It would appear that Dazzler has hit a bit of a raw nerve with some people and why is that I ask myself - hmmmmmmm - I rest my case!

Ugh, take a pill!

We are actors talking about extra work, we are not extras talking about extra work.

If it bothers you so much stop following the thread trying to dictate what we should and shouldn't talk about.

...'actors talking about extra work' - yes keep trying to convince yourself of that then if it makes you feel any better!

We take it then, that you have no kind and inspirational advice to give, to the newcomer in our ranks ???.

Oh gosh, whereas at least dazzler has had the good sense to keep quiet we've now got stacy who's taken up the offensive and I do mean offensive, now we're insecure! On top of all the defammatory stuff beforehand.
This isn't about extra work any more it's about being rude to your fellow artistes.
We've all proved that those who have experience of extra work keep on working and those that prefer to do something else do something else most of the time.
The thread was petering out but well done stace ! you've stirred me up again!

Insecure?!? Not in the slightest Stacey. I'm consistent working in my chosen industry spending 90% of my life on set in some capacity or another!

Wedding?!? I don't think so!

It does make me wonder why, of the two camps, the one that frowns on doing extra work is the one being rude and obnoxious while the one that sees no harm in it is the one that remains civilised, nurturing and encouraging to its peers!

Thanks for reviving the thread Stacey...I feel there is still much to discuss as this thread steams away from the actor/extra debate and heads off onto the realms of the blatant and unneccessary rudeness of some so called professionals towards the newcomers and aspirational extras who want nothing more than progress up the ladder!

...And thanks to all you guys out there who have responded to MY posts and PMs. This really is a professional site and the actors are very knowledgable. I am a very creative person, and if I was not able to express it through drama and music and 'meet' like minded people, I would go mad.
Besides, tis the merry month of Ramadan...so no more bikkering. Love you all x

Yes, I agree this has now gone beyond the point of relevance, and have no doubt the moderators will lock the thread down very shortly.

Just in reply to Louise's predicament, however, I felt it should be pointed out that you don't have to suffer 'reminder' emails telling you that a new post has been added to a thread if you don't want to. You simply choose the option 'do not alert me to replies' from the drop down box whenever you post. I hope that this facility is available to agencies as well as actors, because it doesn't half save your inbox from getting clogged up needlessly.

Nigel, I am still here! and how pathetic that you think you have to get rid of someone off a thread- i have just been reading this thread laughing my head off.

it seems that we have alot of insecure sensetive people on here but thank god we have forbes to offer his words of wisdom. tell me forbes how much preperation does it take to walk past a camera? i am sure all ccp members would love to hear about your 90% work on set.

well it looks like we dont have to worry about advice on this site anymore as we have good old forbes to see us through NOT!

as for the agent's comments your entitled to your opinion and frankly if you have time to join in this thread i would be a very worried client!

however, your all keeping me very amused. maybe they should rename this site CASTINGCALL UNPRO

I should, I could, but I simply can't be bothered sparring with you any longer Nathan. You have obviously nothing to contribute other than personal attacks and snide comments! That I suspect would be a bigger sign of insecurity and/or jealousy than anything I or any of the other working actors or agents who have consistently encouraged and mentored the newcomers who frequent this site.

You, Nathan, are boring me now so I wish you well in your call centre, estate agency or whatever McDonalds you find yourself in next. I'll be thinking of you when I'm next onset...which, incidentally is Thursday on a commercial!

Well, I'm not sure how much I know about this business, but I do know that it's probably better to be civil to people rather than uncivil. Dazzler, I'm afraid whatever validity your original point may or may not have is tarnished by the way you choose to express it.

The practical question as to whether extra work is helpful in becoming familiar with screen work and the way a shoot works is pretty obvious, I'd have thought: yes. And as Forbes (I think) pointed out v early on in this thread. Would you rather earn eighty-odd quid for a day on a shoot or fourteen hours in a call-centre.

The pragmatic question about whether or not extra work advances an actor's career or not I'm not qualified to judge.

But speaking as one whose career has been almost entirely stage-bound, I for one have always been rather envious of Forbes' screen experience. Certainly, it's very difficult to look at his CV and claim that he is not earning a living from film and TV, which is, after all, the ultimate aim of anyone who wants to work in film or TV! Cheap shots at his - or Louise's - expense are not helpful to anyone (least of all, potentially, to yourself) and not especially accurate either.

Louise, for the record, I wasn't getting at you, my phone didn't update the thread and I was responding to an earlier post. So I quickly sent another one which was agreeing with you.

Sorry for the confusion there!

Mm to be honest Dazzler I found your earlier reply to the young lady rude .Of course extra work is nobodys first choice, but we havent all got a choice in the matter have we! I myself have been working as an actor for over 11 years. But unlike your good self,Im not proud or frankly up my own arse &take work wherever it may come from.I tend to pick my walk on work carefully,so that in the course of those boring days when Im pretending to talk in the background,I take the time to study every aspect of life on a working set.Ive also chatted to a few good directors, and have handed them my CV and showreel in a polite manner.which has resulted in a couple of small acting roles. These roles would not have been possible had I not been on set in the first place.I spent my 3 years at Drama school & came out as many people have done before and since, with an expectation of good quality work. But when it comes right down to it very few people are lucky enough to get a flying start.Patience is required along with a willingness to be humble.Directors would much rather work with an actor who while being good is also a pleasure to work with. Not someone who thinks hes gods gift just because he trained at RADA.I toured with Robert Powell a few years ago,he never trained anywhere,he was in fact a Uni student, who got involved in acting by almost complete chance. Not once did I ever feel, even though I was an acting asm ,that he was looking down on me.It was a great honour to work with someone who never spoke down to anyone.Frankly your attitude to the young lady is rather like the worst runner whos the directors daughter,or the 4th AD who thinks extras are all idiots.Nobody likes a snob.
