I Want One ! ! !

Graham Smith
Actor

Hello to the room.

I'm looking for an Agent who is likely to take on somebody with limited professional experience, and would appreciate any names you might have. I'm prepared to travel and, like most people of my generation, prepared to work hard to get on.

'There are no problems...Only solutions'

Cheers

Carmel,

I often struggle to find auditions which are as good quality as the ones you found before you had your current agent. Are these people that sourced you through websites and invited you to audition, people that you wrote to / applied through websites to, people that you had contacts connecting you to? etc etc. Hope that's not too personal.

Generally,

I have found that agents DO put you up for the jobs you wouldnt get yourself, but even I have found that with my previous agent, I seemd to get all my own work- Im actually also talking about the big auditions- 42nd Street and Bill kenwright type stuff. I just wrote off and they wanted to see me. This is the issue-

I think the agents are good for certain things but ultimately they play good cop/bad cop with casting directors and producers and negotiate on your behalf. If you sit around waiting for an agent to get job offers you will never do anything.

I think we are our own best cients and need to look at agents as a TOOL but not ultimatley essential. I know someone who gets alher own West end auditions and she has an agent- and a GOOD one. The agemts name just gives her more credibility I suppose.

I think that was a very good summary, Blake.
So... How do you get noticed out of the many unsolicited applications that the bigger shows get? On the strength of your CV? Genius letter writing skills? Contacts?

I dont know to be honest. The friend who got her own West end auditions actually was so sassy as to write-

I know I have no West End experience, but I wont have that until someone auditions me and gives me a job!!!!

She actually got noticed because of that. I am wary of trying it though- I think a woman can get away with it more than a guy- a guy will come across as arrogant but a woman could probably wing it.....

Its a combination of things I think- and ultimatley if you are right for it..they are casting so young nowadays for all these bloody shows that the fact you dont have to be paid much due to lack of experience seems to be the biggest qualifier!!!!!
Or am i a tad cynical? Been a rough month... have developed an edge....

Am I going to get told off for going off topic and asking for things for my own information? I hope not cos other people reading this can benefit from the others experience that I am requesting.

I don't understand. She got noticed because of what?

The fact that she bluntly said that she knows she has no West end experince and she wont get that unless she is given a job somewhere-

her apporach is that you are not born with five West End credits and she told them as much- they saw her for auditions.

Oh I see. Well, it got her through the door. I think that comes under 'Genius letter writing skills.' That's such a hard thing: Pitching stuff to get noticed without being a pain in the backside. I think I'm saying that if I could charm the birds off the trees then I'd get loads of very posh auditions. But wouldn't we all...If I was rich I'd have loads of money.... (HaHa).
