TIE Audition Monologues
I've not really been acting much this year and since getting a Xmas temp job in retail I've decided to try and get some 'real work' over Christmas. I'm very inexperienced when it comes to auditions so don't have many monologues at my disposal. I've luckily managed to get some auditions for TIE jobs and am really stuck for audition pieces. They've said that my monologues don't have to be from children's theatre but I'm still not really sure what to go for. Any suggestions at all would be very helpful?! Thanks in advance.

Hey Alex,
I see you have done quite a bit of Theatre is there something you could use from those shows? You know the play, the character etc, always a good idea if you can use something you have performed before, especially if you are not used to Auditioning. You would be more comfortable with the character. Always go for something that shows your ability, are they asking for just one monologue? Or do they want contrasting one's? What suits you best, are you comedy or straight actor? Go with your strengths.
Have a look online for ideas, or go to Foyles and have a look through monologue books for your age. You can get most stuff online these days.

Thank you for your advice Caroline.
Unfortunately I am now unable to attend the audition but am keen to brush up on my audition skills in preparation for the future. Most of the characters I've played on stage have not had monologues and the ones that have I feel may be inappropriate for TIE auditions as they are slightly too explicit in terms of swearing and sexual or violent content. Would I be correct in assuming that these would not be great choices for audition speeches?
They asked for two contrasting speeches. I am competent in both serious and comedic roles so I assume for the future doing one of each could help me. Obviously that depends slightly on the role/production.

Hi Alex,
I would probably pick something more appropriate, for TIE, other than that use them for other Theatre jobs. Yes most companies ask for contrasting or ask you to read from the script. I find mostly these days they ask you to read from the script, especially if it is a big production and a well known production company. Try classes that do audition skills, if you feel you need to brush up. And just trust your instincts on what you feel is best to use for different roles, productions.

Thank you both for your advice. Is it usual for people to audition with speeches from films?
I'd usually recommend using a theatre piece for auditions - shows you have some knowledge of the sort of production they are putting on but if there is a film monologue that's perfect for the character and you know you are going to nail then go for it! ^_^
