Breaking into Video Editing

I have been out of college for almost five months now, and while I have found modest success as a contract editor for a small company in NYC, a job which took nearly three months of searching and grinding to land, but in that three-month I had applied to well over a hundred video editor positions between May and August, only to wind up with radio silence.

I went to school to become an editor, among other things, but I have found more luck working in production as opposed to post-production. Are the prerequisites for being a video editor so high that any fresh college graduate is basically doomed from the word go? How do entry-level editors get their start?

Hi William,

I own a media production and design company where I produce, direct, edit, animate, etc, as well as teach others how to do this kind of work. I also occasionally need freelancers in production and post. I'm happy to review your reel and maybe give you some feedback on what you can do to set yourself apart from the crowd. I might even be able to bring you into a project if it's a good fit.

Feel free to DM me here or connect on LinkedIn at www.linkedin.com/in/ChristineMarsh.

Best,
Christine

Christine,

I'm also interested in having my editing reel critiqued as I have been a media educator (teaching youth) for 3 years and have just now started to apply for video editor positions and realizing how hard it can be to get noticed. Please let me know if I can send my reel as well.

Thanks,
Amina
