Horse Riding Lessons

Have you tried those a little further out like Lee Valley way or up towards Epping?

I'd be interested in your results as it's something I'd like to do again myself.

www.filmhorses.com These stables are based just outside Windsor and are run by a tiny but fearsome lady called Janet. They provide horses and training for film & tv but I seem to recall that you can also go for regular lessons - give them a call. I did a weekend course there, arranged through a combat company, and can testify that these horses are huge; my husband weighs about the same as you and these horses had no problem carrying him. Film Horses?
Is that Janet Rogers? She is well known in the Buisnes, I have ridden one of her horses, and I am not far shy of 17 Stone.

I think I'm roght in saying that Lea Valley should be able to cope with most of you, and I seem to remember that they aren't too eye-wateringly pricey. they are a bit BHS school- focussed, which means they aren't keen on things like riding one-handed, but they are used to actors, and patient and understanding. Mind you, Clare has come up with a specialist, and I would guess that, as usual, her idea is better.

CC is correct Janet at film horses is definitely where you want to go. She can teach anyone to do just about anything on horseback. From basic riding skills up to and including jousting & mounted combat. & her horses are designed to carry beefy men in armour so they'll have no probs with you. I have ridden with Janet many times over the last few years she has taught me to joust & more recently sidesaddle so I can highly recommend her. Also she puts all her riding tuition in the context of riding on a film set so it's really useful. Hope it helps.

The Centre of Horseback Combat looks pretty damn nifty too and I'm sure they could cope with significant weight

Thanks folks for all your input and suggestions. Janet, the lady that several of you suggested, got back to me last night. She said my weight was not a problem and I'm in the process of booking a block of about ten lessons. They will work out at about forty quid per hourly lesson ( which according to my research is very reasonable).
Janet said that about ten lessons would have me confident and competent on a horse and then i could move on to jousting etc if I wanted.
Looking forward to it and thanks for your invaluable help folks.

I would look outside London as you will fine much more variety. Oxfordshire Warwickshire's etc. Only an hour outside London but it is proper horse country.
I ride and own my own horse and cast for a big commercial that is on my reel, at a central London yard and I couldn't believe the cramped conditions and lack of facilites. Horses really are for the country not the city.
There are many equestrian centres around the country that can offer lessons, workshops. And extended training with a greater variety of horses for you to ride. Sounds like you need a big friendly cob to me!

Trent Park have a 16st limit and it's not expensive (though that's obviously a subjective view).

Filmhorses website now doesn't mention anything about lessons so do they still do them?

Yes they do but don't really advertise that fact. Just ring Janet & she'll give you all the details
