Scottish Actors Showcase?

I wondered whether anything like this currently exists for professional actors as opposed to drama school graduates, and if not, whether anyone might be interested in trying to put something together?

It's an idea I've been toying with for a couple of years but I think it would need a) a reasonable number of people; b) at least some people who have already been involved in some kind of showcase and have some idea of what format works best (I have no formal training, so I've never seen a drama school showcase) and c) a bit of momentum.

I started looking into something similar previously, but struggled to pull anything together due to other commitments. I still think it could be a really useful undertaking though, but it would need at the very least half a dozen people really committed to making it happen.

If anyone is interested in exploring the idea, please feel free to PM me or post to the group.

    Best wishes

I am totally shocked that you have received no replies from Scottish actors to this suggestion!

I know that discussions were taking place to organise a get together. But I don't know the outcome of it.

Is Apathy rampant as well as the lion?

I'd be interested in this. I have put on two showcases with my theatre company, so have some experience of that kind of thing.

    Hey Karen,

Gosh I haven't seen you in years!!

Yes its something I thought of a few times as well. But if I'm honest.... I stopped dreaming because I don't know how well they would be received. The industry here isn't massive and most shows are cast through personal connections - a lot as you would expect through drama school connections.

Also I've worked on organising a number of CPD courses and 'gyms' for actors with professional directors, CDs etc but many are not willing to part with even the smallest amount of money.

I would be MORE than happy to chat to you about the idea though and work out exactly

    - who we are looking to showcase

    - why it is important in the area

    - what we are trying to achieve by doing so etc.

If it is to be done then I think we need to really blow people out of the water to get any attention!

Do you want to arrange a wee meeting and see if we can get the ball rolling??

Thanks CJ and Torya for replying. I must admit I was feeling pretty low after my last check of the site yesterday when no one had replied at all. And thank you Alan for your comments too - apathy really is very disheartening, so I was delighted to know that at least someone had read the original post.

A meeting to discuss the concept would be great. I'm Glasgow based - would Glasgow be a suitable location for a meeting? Does anyone else want to come along to discuss the idea? How about next week one evening?

    Best wishes

I live in Thirsk, North Yorkshire.

I would love to attend that meeting and show you how you could set up a FANTASTIC showcase that CDs, agents and TV people would be stupid to miss.

I'm definitely up for it, but the next couple of weeks aren't great for me as I'm rehearsing/touring pretty much every night. I could make closer to the end of August though.

OK - How about we meet on Friday 29th August in Glasgow City Centre. A coffee shop would probably be ideal, so I suggest the Starbucks in Borders on Buchanan Street. Say 6pm? Is that reasonable for all? It's about the most central place I can think of for transport routes and hopefully allows us to meet without having to scream over loud music.

Hope to see you there. If the date is unsuitable for you, let me know ASAP.

    Thanks

Absolutely - open invite to all professional actors who are either based in Scotland or would like to take part in a showcase in Scotland.

I hope you get more than have answered this message!

It could be the shortest showcase in performance history otherwise.

Ha ha. It could be Alan or it could be one and a half hours of the best four (I haven't counted so don't kill me) actors that Scotland has to offer!!

And yes, 29th is good for me too and in the diary!

If you can get ten actors who are willing to really go for it I will make the effort to get there and help you make it a show that will knock them dead in the aisles.

    Starbucks?

All decent, left leaning, informed Scots people should boycott Starbucks. Yuk! 'orrible place and all that they represent.

I have two friends who are interested and will be coming along, and another who is interested but will be rehearsing that night. However, she'd still like to be involved if possible. I make that 7 or 8 so far!

    Hi folks,

Just catching up on news and spotted this post, I'd definitely like to be involved. I'm in London on Friday 29th so sadly can't make the meeting - Karen, I'll catch up with you the following Monday if that's still okay?
