voiceover work

just thought I would suggest it to those who haven't thought about it... try and get some voiceover work - money is excellent when you do get work. I've been doing voiceovers since I arrived in London 12 years ago and I know how hard it is to get an agent when you start but it's like everything else, if you work hard at it you can take off. And beside, you can be on the marketplace even without an agent - I have representatino but am also on www.voicefinder.biz, and like I said in another thread, it's an invaluable source for anyone interested in voiceovers. Good luck!

Thanks! Working my way up... still trying to work out my next phase of world domination. Note sure websites are the way to go- the ones I have are great, but I think spending more would be silly.

Thanks Pierre for this topic, with the spirit of goodwill. It's interesting to read what you all had posted.

I'm a fairly new member with CCP, currently residing in London. I had never thought of becoming an actor, until I was selected and offered for quite an important role by an award winning British director to be in his film, which would be played in the cinema next year. I will not be in it, however, it has made me realised the potential that someone saw in me some years ago while I was still doing all the background work, and now I would consider getting into it seriously.

I was an audio engineer for 9 years, and 2 years as a producer. I do have quite a fair bit of experience in voice over supervision and talent selection, had won several International Awards for my works, I'll be happy to share what I know if it may help any of you in any way. However, I am not familiar with the market here, so here I am observing and absorbing your experiences.

Looking forward to sharing.

(sorry for the late response I was abroad on holiday!) You're welcome Veronica - you have an interesting CV and I don't think it'll be too difficult for you to make your mark here! And as said before if there's anything I can help with don't hesitate to ask - all the best!

I've recently joined voice123 which has opened me up to more US work- no work yet but plenty of castings- even a private one just for me...
Also buying voice over contacts and starting direct marketing to ad agencies etc...
Hope everyone's going well!

Thanks Pierre for you kind offer, I shall ask you very soon. In fact, I am currently preparing my own website with full CV. I have engineered a few thousands of mixes, and done hundreds of voice overs or jingles throughout all the years, but my mind went blank when I think of the titles and the year of productions, so I'm in the process of getting the company to send me a copy of my past pay slip record and that should help. It takes too long to search for the archives, most probably I'll re-record a new demo in Malaysia itself in the next 2 months, I have access to almost all the facilities there, unfortunately not here at this moment...

...and if any of you need any help for your demo, do ask too.

Will send you a PM Pierre ;-) thanks again.

you're very welcome Veronica, any time! Sally I must say, you deserve all the work you get, you certainly aren't waiting for it to come to you - self-promotion is the key, if only more people understood that... I am on 123 as well but being French there's not much there for me, and what's on for me they want to pay peanuts for, so not that good for me really!
You're saying that you're buying VO contacts, did you get anything that you couldn't find with a bit of googling and browsing through various industry websites? Just being curious and nosy really ;-)

Essentially the book lists companies using voice overs, e.g. ad agencies, production companies, and how they like to be approached. So I guess yes. And for twelve pounds I would say it's worth sepculating a bit.
At present I'm trying to re-jig the CD I send out- I currently use the labels on cds (called u-stick-it or something) and print out my cover and insheet. However I think it's coming off amaturish so I want to get them printed by someone else- anyone have any ideas for comanies that will print onto blank CDs and make covers for the box? Alternatively I supose I could make a high quality print and use a glossy photocopier, but again I don't want to look unprofessional.

How's the speculating going? Worth the investment?

I'm wading through a load of mp3 files sent to me by the folks I do my audio books for and trying to find the killer 30 seconds for my showreel. I have come to the conclusion that I never want to edit any of my own material ever again....Damn I hate my own voice right now....

Still fighting on!
Yes, don't listen to yourself too much- it puts doubts in your mind!
My next ploy is targetting advertising agencies, and possibly agents...just finishing off the design for my cd as we speak...

Wow Sally, next the world ;-) I think it's actually good to listen to yourself - it helps you improve on your delivery rhythm and finetune inflexions and intentions - well, it helps me anyway! Good luck with the agents!

MWA HAH HAH HAH!
Yes, it does feel like I'm taking over the world, slightly.
I mean with listening to your recordings over and over in editing- can send you quite batty. The breath that everyone else finds perfectly acceptable once heard a million times is unbearable!
Am about to purchase Voice Over Contacts, in a bid to continue world domination...

I know what you mean, it's true you can become obsessed with things that no one will notice, but better being over perfectionist than slack, you couldn't believe some of the demos I've heard over the times! Good luck in your quest ;-)

Wow, well what a fantastic thread- I do love CCP for a great bit of advice! I had my voice-reel done with 'Crying Out Loud' in Feb and i thought they were great. Marina (the director) is great and a very experienced director and writer and was a great help with chosing the pieces, which was great because i had no time as i was doing panto. The recording came out great and i am very happy with the result.
Please do have a listen and tell me what you think- would be great to have some feedback.

It is a good demo which really displays your strengths - Marina and Simon are great indeed. A little tip: there's a better way to display your address there, mine is www.voicefinder.biz/voice/pierre-maubouche
as in, firstname hyphen lastname - this way it's easier for people to remember!

Cheers Anna! You know, when I started a (long) while back, there were people to help me to get started, so if I can pay it forward I'm more than happy to. This thread is the most viewed thread on CCP so far with almost 5500 views, that must mean that quite a lot of people are interested in the topic, so if I can help few to get ahead in VO work then great ;-)
