23.10 - Webchat with Guy Michaels from Round Island

Dear Voices,

We're starting a new series of webchats with the industry's finest and so it's time to introduce you to our first guest, Guy Michaels - responsible for the VoiceReels production @ Round Island, his obsession with a high quality end product means he only works with 2 clients a week maximum.

How often do you wonder how to make your voice-reel work for you? Do you still find it difficult to figure out what the secret is to finding voice-over jobs?

A live chat covering the two topics above will take place here in this thread on THURSDAY, 23rd October, from 12:00 to 2pm.

See you next week!

I am here, will there be live audio or just web only chat?
Wondering if I need to edit my showreel bits down further & whether I need to go to a voice reel place to add on to my already done pro credits.
Thanks!

Hi.

I have a question regarding my COMMERCIAL REEL. In your opinion, do I need to edit the first piece down further so as to get to my remaining ads quicker??? (the first piece was audio material for an online video, so is a bit long)

And what are your general thoughts about the order of my ads? The more fun/high energy ones are at the end, for instance. Should I mix it up a bit more perhaps?

Thanks for the advice!

How long should each "clip" be within a reel? Is there a fairly standard time before moving onto the next? Thanks

Hi there Guy
I have two questions regarding voice work.
Firstly, I have a Yorkshire accent which people have told me they enjoy listening to (and of which I'm very proud!) Would you suggest that I promote myself as having a Northern voice or just say that I am versatile and can do a range of accents?
Secondly, do you think I am more likely to secure voice work if I invest in home studio equipment and get a training certificate? Bee Audio are currently charging £250 for this type of training.
Thanks in advance for your advice.
All the best,
Claire Patrick

So what is the top top on making it work for you? Diversify of accents or just being very clear you have one voice? I have a Native British accent but a Polish father so I do a lot of accents inc of course Polish, Russian etc.

hello Guy,

great to e-meet you and hello to the community too.

How would you advise a non-native speaker (my mother tongue is French) to promote their accent in English. Emphasize it or try to better one's English pronunciation?

Also, is it OK to send you links for analysis and feedback about our reels?

Many thanks!

Hi Guy
Thanks very much for your advice - I was hoping you'd say go for promoting the Northern voice!
Definitely considering the home-studio set up too...
All the best
Claire :)
