23.10 - Webchat with Guy Michaels from Round Island

Dear Voices,

We're starting a new series of webchats with the industry's finest and so it's time to introduce you to our first guest, Guy Michaels - responsible for the VoiceReels production @ Round Island, his obsession with a high quality end product means he only works with 2 clients a week maximum.

How often do you wonder how to make your voice-reel work for you? Do you still find it difficult to figure out what the secret is to finding voice-over jobs?

A live chat covering the two topics above will take place here in this thread on THURSDAY, 23rd October, from 12:00 to 2pm.

See you next week!

Hi Guy. Great tips so far, thanks a bundle for this!

Obviously Voices Pro is a great source for quality voice work but the list of jobs and opportunities is still relatively small.

I've yet to get my voicereel done (criminal I know!) but would you primarily opt for other job sources or an agent?

Kind regards,

Dave

Hello Guy,

Thanks for doing this.

When it comes to [advertising] demos for North Americans, is there more need for the range of accents, or do your comments to Claire still apply?

(I've sent you a copy for review, hope that's ok.)

Grateful regards,
P

Great, will send my reel over to you after this. Thanks Guy! :)

I do have another question, actually...

I would love to get more work in the following areas:
- Audio Drama
- Children's Narration
- and Animation/Video Games

What's the best way to break into these particular areas???

1) Firstly, these 3 are very different & separate areas altogether, aren't they? So does this mean I need 3 separate reels for each of these?

2) And then once I have the reels, are there specific agents who deal with these specific areas? Or should I write to publishers, production companies direct who do this sort of work?

3) And lastly, in regards to Children's work: apart from Narration, Audio Books, is there any other audio work connected to the Children's market? This question is to clarify what sort of material I would need to record for a "Children's Reel". Or can the children's material simply be part of a regular Narration Reel?

Thanks for you help Guy! :)

Excellent tips so far.

Definitely Home Studio A at the minute with an aspiration for B. Not in any way undaunted by the amount of work I'd need to put in and, yes, I'm obviously just an amateur at the moment but we've all got to start somewhere eh? :)

Didn't see your response before posting that last one.

Thank you for this, forging your own path is obviously the way to go and marketing yourself is key. I'll take what you've said (on this entire thread!) and run with it.

Warm regards and thanks again,

Dave

Thanks Guy, all helpful, looking forward to any feedback.

here's the links for ACX, who you mentioned in your reply to Gabriele. I think this may offer me a good practice area, in a slightly different sector, cheers!

Guy, thanks a million for taking the time and sharing your knowledge & experience with all VP members. I'm sure that this chat will benefit not only those who were actively participating, but also all "voices" who didn't have the chance to make it this time and ask questions themselves.

Dear Voices, feel free to carry on with exchanging opinions in this topic and stay tuned for some information about our next live chat!

And don't forget to check the Round Island's recent offer closing on the 31st of October -> FREE STUDIO MICROPHONE

Cheerio,
The VP Team
