Commission

I recently changed my agent and I am being charged 25% + vat on a commercial fee. It seems pretty high to me - what do you think?

Yes this is high, normally through an acting agent it would be around 15%. This seems like a commercial only/model agent rate

It's high, but I am sure it was mentioned in the contract that you would have signed with the Agent, so you have agreed to it.

20-25% for commercials is perfectly normal, rest assured. 15% or lower would be extremely rare for this these days and more in line with theatre (10-15%). It varies from agent to agent but it’s certainly in line with the way things have ‘evolved’ commission wise. Good luck!

Haha count yourself lucky, I was signed with an agent that took 35% (albeit they were a modelling agency with an actors unit) - but imagine my surprise when I did a commercial and they not only took the 20% that client added on as an agent fee, they also dove into my pot to take another 15% haha.

In all seriousness though, 25% is a tad high as it usually goes towards 15%-20% BUT to the same token I like to think about commission in general as '25% of money that I never would've seen anyway if my agent didn't get me the job' - glass half full and all that jazz ;) haha - have a great year

Thanks for all the advice. Absolutely true, I did sign the contract but had forgotten how high the agency take was compared to my last agent, so it was a bit of a shock! They have a separate commercial branch under the same management and commission on other work is lower - but then so are the rewards!

Hi
25% seems high to me, the rate Varies for theatre, film, commercials, but remember if you dont get a job they dont get there 25%....so maybe you get what you pay for?

Hi
I was going to sign with new agent. They wanted me to have new photo's that they were going to charge me for. Then I asked about commission and they told me it would usually be 33.33%....when I questioned this I was told that times have changed and this was the going rate although on some jobs it would be 20%. Hence to say I decided not to join this agency.

A wise decision Jeff...they sound incredibly greedy! I have had a lot of castings through my current agency. Far more than with other agents I have been with, so can’t really complain.

Unfortunately, sounds about right:
Theatrical agents charge around 10%-15% (you might find the odd ones that charge 20%).
Commercial agents charge 25% for all medias and 33.33% for print.

What really annoys me is that they also charge VAT on top of that...
