companies

I find it a bit disconcerting when a company (I presume) looks at your profile but they aren't advertising for any of the jobs you've applied for and they don't seem to have any presence on the net. Anyone else feel the same?

I suppose it might be a bit disconcerting if you're concerned about internet security. Then again, at least they show a name and can thus theoretically become known at some point if they feel it is worth their while. Some companies will speculate as to the sort of actors they want for a specific role in a specific project, and their presence is not yet extant because the presence is project-related and the project has yet to get off the ground. Bear in mind also that whilst intellectual property is a thing in law, a good lawyer will always find loopholes, and so the creator thinks himself wise for keeping mum until the project can safely be publicised.

If you are concerned, you might give thought to limiting the information you give out - then again, that might well cost you work. You have to analyse these things, weighing against past experience and seeing how things pan out as you go.

The same could theoretically be said of unregistered users, who may present a greater danger for being anonymous. Thus, they could be anybody. True, it is possible for Mandy to block access to members' profiles: the Register of Artists' Models, of which I am also a member, does this - but then, due to the nature of the work there is often, shall we say, sensitive information thereon, which it wouldn't do for, say, a ten year old with access to Google to be able to find.

Hi Andrew, thank you for your response. I think you’ve read too much into my initial post - I don’t find it threatening, just odd that they don’t have some kind of web presence. One can’t search for companies on Mandy, and I do understand the logic behind that. However, the lack of anything to weigh up, should the company be looking for talent is a bit worrying ax to their legitimacy and professional status.

As one character, somewhere (even if it's just my own mind) had it, "just covering the bases, Ma'am, just covering the bases". But as I said, in the creative realm, all things are possible - even some of the things that aren't. I like to think that it's more an oasis than a jungle out there - but then I'm big, ugly and scary to wrong'uns!
