Getting copy of Student Film - TVU

  • Mary Tynan

    Actor

I appeared in a film for a student from Thames Valley University at the beginning of January. I know the film was completed and submitted to the college the following week, but despite speaking to the on the phone and by email, I still haven't got a copy. I am thinking of approaching the university, and think I should do it now before the end of the academic year. Has anyone had any success with this approach? Many thanks.

Mary, if you are wanting the result for a Showreel ... get on the bloody phone right now ... they didn't have to wait for your services, so why do you have to wait for them ??. Get on to their superiors immediately !!.

im in a similar situation, and its not only coming up to the end of the school year, but the students in particular are moving to a different college next year. i did get in touch with them recently and they told me it was edited as a rough-cut for their tutor and the second edit is currently underway. do i take their word for it or do i contact the uni too?

i dont wanna make any enemies by going behind their back when they've told me it's being edited and they promised me a copy.

Thanks for the feedback. I have emailed his Head of School, and will ring if she doesn't reply. I know the films was completely edited and submitted and marked back in January.

    Hey Mary,

I had this problem once quite a few years ago and I kept being delayed by the students. I ended up finding out who the Head of Department was, finding out when they would be working next and walked into the University. It unfortunately caused the University some embarrasment but the Head of Department was very apologetic and extremely disappointed in the students. He burnt me off a copy there and then, so I got my film. (In hindsight though it wasn't worth it as the film was really poor!!!!)

    Never mind :)

I have just heard back from the woman I emailed that she has forwarded my mail to another member of staff, so fingers crossed (also that the film will be worth it in the end :)

    Hey Mary, hope you're well!

I had a delay last time I did one for this Uni and although they didn't mean it, it was frustrating. In some ways I wish I had complained too as I get the feeling that the more of us who do, the more responsible the students will be forced to be. For instance, I know for a fact that the students in one particular uni are downgraded if the DVDs aren't supplied to a deadline. In two cases (different uni's), I had to go an pick the DVDs up myself, but I didn't mind so long as I knew the film was actually available!

Good on you for getting things moving. I wonder if there is more could be done to raise the responsibility levels of these students?

Forget about emailing them. You go to the school and demand for a copy of your work on dvd.

You just remember this is your career.

lol, why do i surprise you?

    hha oh well

I know i probably will regret it, but I'm giving the students the benefit of the doubt (i know i know)

but the last i heard from (one of them, the director didnt respond) was that it IS being edited again and i WILL get a copy. ive sent one last email, just now, expressing my concern over the end of year coming up etc. and i'll await that response. if i get nothing by the middle of next week i will contact the film school and try to get a copy of the version they submitted for marking.

Nate ... you know how many times this particular 'bone of contention' has been gnawed upon. It seems to turn up every other week. So ... we are all well informed . Forewarned is forearmed .. so pre-empt the buggers !!!.

The students were very good overall, no complaints at all, even TVU...although I did have to go round to one film companies office with some rather well build bald guys to get a copy of one of my films! :-/

Still no luck with TVU. The man my mail has been forwarded to has not replied and is not answering my phone. Since I'm lucky enough to have a day (temp) job at the moment, I don't really want to have to take time off from it and go all the way over to Ealing.

    Mary!

Ring the University, and ask to be put through to the principle. Top person who is in charge of the whole University.....not just the film course. Keep a careful log of all communications you receive and send, make etc...inc times, dates and persons names.

Write a proper letter....forget emails...to the principle, and tell him or her, your story so far, listing all dates and communications made so far, and that unless a proper DVD copy of your edit is not delivered to you within 7 days, you will take legal action, and seek all costs incurred by yourself.

You might like to also remind the principle, if a contractor was paid to complete some contracted work at the Uni, and the contractor never turned up to do the job, the Uni would soon be taking that contractor to court for breech of contract.

I presume a clear verbal and enough pre-shoot emails exists between you and the student involved? By enough I mean...ruddy obvious you had been booked to do and carry out your acting and role within the film. You know its been edited and screened.......now you want what is rightfully yours, and what was agreed, with the student whilst under the directorship of the Uni.

Had you had a proper contract between you and the Student/University at the start.....you could pretty much go straight to court with them.

I hope the Student has not left and taken his/her hard drive with them.....even if they have, the University will still have a copy of the film on disc.....even a screening copy.

It's up to you Mary to stamp enough until you get what you agreed too. If you let them get away with this, you make it a waste of time for yourself, and your fellow actors!

You are going to have your work cut out....I just tried the main switchboard, to get the name you require, for the whole Uni and after 20 mins gave up, coz nobody answered the phone! Be firm and professional, and you will get a result!
