Hi everyone,

I start reheasrsing on Friday and I am starting to lose my voice. I have been gargling with disposible aspirin and drinking lots of water, but I am trying to remember the name of an excellent vocalthroat spray that always works for ... it has been mentioned before on here but I can't find the tread.

Can anyone help

I know lots of people are going to say "aaaah, no, don't do it!", but the one thing that got me through Edinburgh this year was Sandersons. (Along with the steaming, and honey and lemon, etc.)
I wouldn't take it constantly, but as a short term fix it was fantastic- and my voice came back no probs.

If it's a cold, take Contac 12 hour - banishes symptoms for 12 hours so effectively you won't know you've got a cold.

If it's a tired or overworked voice, don't do anything apart from drink lots of water, rest, and get plenty of sleep.

Well I completely lost my voice and so couldn;t do my first show :(

however the thing that brought it back instantly was Sanderson's Specific.

If taste revolting... truly revolting but it does the trick.

Thought I would share that little nugget with you all.

You can get it in local chemists.

Welcome to the Sandersons fanclub!! :)
Sorry to hear you lost your voice, but glad you discovered the phenomenon that is Sandersons!! It was the only thing that got me through Edinburgh- and I think everyone else had discovered by the end of the festival coz they kept running out.

I can second (or third!) the sanderson's.....always have a small vat of the stuff in my cabinet and regularly 'pimp' out the bottles during rehearsals for various things. Magic!

I'm sorry to hear you lost your voice. Never a nice experience. I have to back up everything that Blake's said though. A few years ago I had a run of throat problems and spent a lot of time finding out how to deal with them when I was training. This is what I was told.

1./ Steaming is a MUST.
2./ Gargle with salt and warm water (NOT aspirin) cause salt is a natural antiseptic.
3./ Honey great cause it's a natural antibiotic. Manuka honey has the highest percentage of antibiotic.
4./ NEVER use any kind of anaesthetic cause you can't feel what damage you are doing (that's why aspirin isn't good - kills the pain). That's a good way of ending up with nodules.
5./ Keep chest and throat warm with a scarf/polo necks etc, particularly in this winter weather.
6./ When you're ill or your voice is tired make sure you're speaking on support all the time, even in just normal day to day conversation - it takes a lot of strain off the voice.
7./ Very obvious, but avoid smoking/smoky atmospheres and drinking alcohol.
8./ Drink LOTS of water.
9./ Relax, rest, sleep, relax, rest, sleep, relax, rest, sleep - repeat as often as possible.

I have also got into the habit of putting myself on vocal rest whenever I feel like there's a strain there. It's a bit weird at first but can be quite nice to just stop talking for a while!

The Volcalzone debate: I was told they just strip the vocal chords so they're not that great. I have to say I do still use them from time to time but only as a last resort.

And now I'm going to have to go and try Sandersons!

Hope you have a good run despite the false start. All the best
Alice

Hmm...

Never heard of Sandersons. Will have a look.

My concern is that its a band aid, and if you have had an infection, have had harsh panto demands...its never vocaly easy to do that type of stuff..screaming etc, cartoon voices etc....

you MUST see a GP asap, and have about three to four weeks vocal rest after the production. I got ill recently, and had to take time off. It was hell on earth.

You MUST rest at every available opportunity, steam. and sleep as much as you can. NO menthol, vocalzone etc. Get a vitamiun B shot to jump start your immune system as well.

Im being a bit of a parent, but hell...Im generally like that anyway in life!!! Just keep warm and eat properly.
