How important does your physical image contribute to get you the part?

KEVIN MANGAR

Over the last five years my weight shifted from 13stone lean muscular to 16stone wrestler muscular. My commercial model days were over!I was typecast for "baddies" most of the time and I had to find other areas of acting I could fit in.It was a rough experience but an interesting learning curve!
Now I managed to lose 2stone and trimmed again!Being a perfectionist method actor,I like to experiment and guess what, now I have different physical ranges to suit!

What are your views on that? Are we becoming like America where everybody is "Pre-Ops" or physical outlook plays a very important to get the part?Let's hear you all!

well....an update for those of you who care.

In the last week I've lost 4.4 pounds; 1 mm of fat from each of my bingo wings and 2mm from my back fat. I've lost 1% of body fat - 12% to go!! So far the main thing I have lost is the will to live...did I mention that I've lost bugger all off my arse?!

Off to the gym again tonight with Hitler, my friendly PT.

I should start a blog - it really is a comedy show waiting to happen. Did I mention I've fallen of the treadmill twice and got my arm stuck in the abs machine...?

Desperate for a pie, H xx

Brilliant.
First place it goes is the boobs. last place is the bum.

Scrap that about being skinny- I've got exactly the same measurements as Liv Tyler. Apparently I'm huge...
Bad enough sharing a DOB with Bryce Dallas Howard.

Hi guys,

thanks for your supporting input. As a reward I will give you tips on how to lose weight reasonably fast and healthy at the same time(just in case you are doing the wrong thing!)

CARBOHYDRATES play a major part in losing weight! If you cut your carbohydrates completely, you will lose weight fast, but you will feel "weakish"!
The way to do it(this is how i did it) is to have a little amount of carbohydrates anytime from the time you wake up until 3P.M and definitely no Carbohydrates after 3P.M.

After 3PM until the time you go to bed you can have anything except Carbohydrates! You can have as much fruits, vegetables or meat but no CARBS!Also at night time,if you feel hungry you can have a "bowl of soup" instead .

While you are sleeping, your body would be feeding on your fats and you will start to notice changes after a week.If you do regular cardio exercises, you will get quicker results.

NOW ONE MORE MAJOR THING!!!

No chocolate,no fried food,no breadcrumbs cod,no fast food Mcdonalds, burgerking, kfc etc +no beer. for 6 days in the week.

On the 7th day,you can have everything you want. This is comfort/reward day! and back to dieting the following day!

It takes a while to get used to,but once you get this eating habit in action, you will see results and you will feel guilty if you touch the wrong food!!!

Check my Acting Profile you will see me in different sizes and looks depending on the part I have to play.Hope it helps!

I've been low carbing for 3 years (note: low - not no) No wheat, rice, potatoes (which only bloat me anyway) and of course no choc except diabetic stuff which is great for regulating one :-)
I eat all fresh food and never anything processed.

Yep tis true all about what you look like! bloody hell wel sell ourselves on a picture and of course our CV's but it is what we look like that get's our foot in the door in the first place. i too have joined the gym so far the only thing I have lost is £80 from my bank account but hopefully the weight and some toning up will follow. Yes it is mainly for me but I am well aware that I will get a broader variety of roles if I slim down and tone up. Also being fit and healthy is an excellent bonus!
And to honest I am happier when I am smaller.

Perhaps we should share that blog!

I also think I'd get more work if I was 6ft, blonde, with huge knockers...is there a diet for that?

I think what's really interesting, and it tends to be more for female roles is that the casting only mentions physical attributes, no personal ones.

There's one on the casting board right now.

Now, it's either shallow or it's because a particular "type" of looks are analagous with types of behaviour and personality (we know that's not true)e.g. blonde and beautiful = goody, warty and old = baddy.
We still (as a society) bestow attractive people with other positive qualities they may or may not have, and assume the worst of less attractive people.

When was the last time a heroine in a mainstream film wasn't attractive? And why is it always an oscar nomination event when an attractive actress puts on weight/becomes a brunette/ has a false nose for a part? There are plenty of other actors who already look like that! Why is it such a sacrifice for an attractive person to dull themselves down?

Right, am off to cool down somewhere...with a bag on my head.

Hi Sally,

You look great!Don't knock yourself down!
In the acting world when it comes to physical part,I feel there is two ways about it;
either you accept yourself as you are and hope to get parts regardless how you look, thus focusing on your unique talent(some made big names actors are quite good like that)
OR you try to "modify yourself" to get that ultimate role that will make you immortal yet unforgettable for the years to come and reach the A-List.

God!I sound like a dreamer!!!

I think it is probably best to look the best that you can.. for some that means getting down the gym and working hard others can simply role out of bed like it!

I have applied for roles in the past when they asked for "beautiful", some of them I have got some of them I haven;t even got a reply it is all down to what the employer deems as beautiful.

Its just one of thoose things we have to get used to I guess.

I saw a some programme about the new LA fad - apparantly they can now suck fat from your stomach/bum etc and put in in your boobs. No joke! Maybe there is a god... xx

Taking fat from one part of the body (usually the buttocks) to put in the breast is quite old -they did it in East Grinstead in the 1960s long before silicone implants. I knew someone who had it done. She complained afterwards that they still weren't very big. The surgeon said that they didn't have much to play around with and in tears she said 'that's what my husband says'. True story. They did some amazing plastic surgery there - repairing people's faces after horrendous accidents as well as the cosmetic stuff. I had a breast reduction because at 18 I was aboslutely huge and it was affecting my back.

Well done Helen, as a fellow 'keep fit to try to get fitter AND lose weight-er' I know how hard it can be! Keep it up, and at least youa re doing it sensibly which is more than can be said for everyone (not on here just people in general).

Love Li xxx

Really? They were selling it as the new "thing" on the programme I saw. Obviously didn't do their research!

My friend had the reduction op for same reasons when she was 16 - young but said best thing she ever did.

I saw an interesting documentary that was on in the middle of the night on one of the Sky Channels called 'The Call' I saw two episodes one was following three male actors through their auditions for the same part, the second show was three females actors again all up for the same part. The female show was interesting as of the three women, none actully got the part they were up for. But one in particular they were not impresed with as she had not prepared and needed to keep looking down at the script, as oppsoed to the other two who knew it. But they liked her look, and despite being the worse audition was given another smaller part in the show, based upon her look only.

How I wish I could use the power of "Hypnotism" like Paul McKenna!I would just go to all the big auditions and hypnotise the casting directors into giving me the Big movie roles.Just a dream!

You'd be suprised how well 'mentalism' works in real life!
You can get a book and read up on how to phrase sentences so as to influence what the other person thinks - my brother uses it to get girls but I've been bugging him to tell me the right sentence to have the casting peeps say 'yes, we'd love to have you onboard.....'

well here is the reality scenario.

being tall and stiking does give me an advantage in some areas, such as rough leading men, never "pretty boy leads" , or action /classical parts but other times it can out you out of the running if leads are small.

being too big will limit you as happened to our friend above, being fit and lean is always good as it gives you somewhere to go , ( look at christian bale or even kate winslett!) but if you are a bit big chubby overweight and it GETS YOU PARTS ! what is the problem ? exposure will lead to opening doors then play hwat you would like - look at simon russell beale? is he an obvious choice for hamlet , given his build and age ?

sadly i think we are a bit more like the us now and have to be more image consious, and finding your type is hard as you tend to change every 5 years,

i was lucky in that what i am saying is advice given to me by seasoned pros in early jobs i did
so i just pass it on and believe it will come back somehow
