How long does it take you to learn lines?

I'm busy cramming lines to stand in for an actor who can't make a performance this Monday; which made me wonder - how long does it take people to learn lines?

Sound advice there. Whenever it does happen, it always brings to mind images of Johnny Weismuller as Tarzan swinging through the jungle, until he reaches for the next vine - and it isn't there!

Too right, Allan - back when men were men and monkeys were, ahem, Cheetahs.

Lee: I'm jealous of your ability to find the next strong cue-line. I don't panic in such situations, but I'm rarely the one to 're-set' the action.

You're right about ad-libbed sections sometimes being electric. Seen that more than once. Made me wonder how that level of performance could be acheived without requiring lines to be forgotten.

I actually saw Sir Ian McKellen dry onstage once - though I only knew because he admitted it afterwards.
