Lights for self taping

Hey,

I'm going to invest in some proper lights for doing self-tapes, can anyone recommend some that they've bought? There are so many online that it's hard to know what to go for. I know it'll be helpful if they're dimmable etc.

Cheers,

Freya

I also use a soft box setup... all in all it takes around 15 minutes to set up and take down but like others have said they do take up quite a bit of space once set up. Having said that they fold down to fit in a cupboard or under the bed.

eBay is great and you'll be blue to find a full set up for around £50.

Search YouTube for videos on how to light a scene and play about until you find a solution you're happy with!

Good luck

Hi Freya,

I recently invested in a new camera, sound and lighting for self taping, and as I'm sure many of us are on a budget. I use a 135w soft box photography light for £21.99 and it does just the trick.

Just reviving this post, if anyone has anything to add after 3 years....softbox or LED ? Would prefer something that's easy and portable, so seems like a softbox doesn't fit that category! Do you think I could get away with just one LED panel ? Any thoughts, and thanks in advance!

Hi Jeremy,

Great Video Maker (GVM) is making good led set for self-tape. They are small, powerful and the build quality is good. They are really compact light with everything you need in a small case.

Inside the case, a power line, a power adapter, some light has a barn-doors which can be a bonus. Some are sold with a softening panel which can be great for photo shooting.

For example, GVM 480 LS bicolour is the perfect size for a small set up. Case is only 12 inches x 12 inches so you can store it easily everywhere! I usually use two really near to the camera to avoid shadows. Every light has 2 buttons for a cold or warm intensity or you can even mix them!
You just need to buy a light stand to support the light panel.

I hope that helps!

Thanks Denis....Eeeks, I should have said that I am on a tighter budget than that at the moment. That said, I know you get what you pay for with anything, and these look great. Perhaps I will continue with my rather annoying routine of setting up/dismantling several old-fashioned uplighters/work lights until I've saved up!! Thanks so much!
