The West Coast has it all! Cheap train fares to London, competing rail/coach groups fighting for the business. Over here on the East Coast the cheapest train ticket you can get is £85 from York.
I'm appalled at the disparity.

You can get year round cheap tickets for London/Manchester on

http://www.mobitix.thetrainline.com/vt/advancePurchase.aspx

Great for last minute bookings as they only sell them for up to 3 weeks ahead, and you can have the tickets sent to your mobile, or printer!

alan, how easy/cheap is it for you to get to sheffield? the megabus/megatrain company do train fares from there to london for around a tenner, or cheaper depending on what time of the day

oh actually, i just checked virgintrains for nottingham to london and it would seem there single fares are around the same price too so megatrain is not that much of bargain sorry!

I went to Manchester last week and got the mobitix train up (£9) and Megabus home (£10) so a fairly cheap round trip indeed - definitely recommend the virgin trains link.

Yes, Nathan....when you dropped your sweets on to the track and your dad smacked your legs and the steam from the train looked all funny!!!
No. Sorry. I'm in Thirsk, North Yorkshire. So it's £25 to Manchester and an hour and a half. Then it's a two hour trip to London from Manchester. So I'm such a lazy beggar and not like others who can sit for hours on a bus (very long legs and cramp is my big problem) or hang around waiting for trains to come back then find a connecting one to Thirsk.
But thank you for the suggestion. I'd considered it and rejected it on time factor. The last train from ~Manchester to Thirsk is about 9pm.

Sorry mate.If it's any consolation you've always got a bed here if you needed to split the journey.I'll even dress up as a refreshment operative and i could give my dad a whistle and a depressed look.

I see enough 'depressed looks'. But that is a very good touch, Paul. Would make me feel at home!!

Ah, but then again why should they?
Commercial forces mean that at 'peak times' they could fill their trains probably twice over at the top price. With people standing all the way from Manchester to London as well!
The trouble is that, like most commercial enterprises, the customer comes a very poor second to profit.
As is the situation in just about every case, I'm afraid....

Oh I'm gutted, just bought my ticket back home to Leeds, cost around £85. I should have gone to Manchester and got the link.
Does anyone know of any direct train return (London -Leeds) that are quite cheap, maybe for next time I got back home for a weekend, it's always a bloody fortune!
