Mysterious

The snow is thick outside ... my car hasn't moved for 8 days, perhaps a folly, living at the bottom of a fairly steep hill. All the lanes are blocked so ... log fire blazing merrily, I'm sat here, not quite contemplating my navel, but my socks !!. Something quite mysterious is afoot, if you'll pardon the expression. So, in the words of The Man In Black, Mr Valentine Dyall, pull your chair up closer to the fire and turn the lights .. down .. low ...
I have noticed that when I put on a pair of socks, even new from the packet socks .. within a few minutes I find that the heel is now atop my instep !!.
Now.. does that mean cosmic forces are at work ... perhaps telling me to re-trace my footsteps, or am I walking back to Christmas unintentionally ??.
Is it possible that the next Christmas I see, will be a re-run of this God-awful Christmas ??.
Now I am a great believer in Newton's third law of motion ... For ever action, there's an equal and opposite re-action. As an Actor it is the foundation stone of all acting ... so it comes naturally to me to think that the action of my socks is due to a re-action elsewhere ... or vice versa. But what that action was, or is, is beyond me. Mysterious ? quite !!!!.

What a great question, Allan and congrats Aidan…I did see the question minutes after you added it to the thread, Allan…but, I had to pop out and only now able to come back online.

Along with Cecil Fredericks and Robbie Vincent, Harry Korris as you said Aidan made up the trio "Ramsbottom, Enoch and Me". Cecil was Ramsbottom, Vincent was Enoch and Korris was "Mr Lovejoy" Now there was also a train of thought that the 'me' part could have been a reference to the various guest performers the trio used to invite into their radio shows, as Harry's Mr Lovejoy was the 'Theatre Manager' in the show (but I doubt this to be the case)

Cecil's suave, debonair manner was a perfect counter to Korris's mock pomposity and Enoch's gormless twerp roles.

For me a similar act (and if I'm honest) my personal favourites of that era were Jimmy James, Bretton Woods, later known as Eli Woods, 'Our Eli', and Hutton Conyers, played by a young Roy Castle during the mid 50's. I loved one of their best known routines 'elephant-in-the-box'

I once spent a very pleasant railway journey with Mr. Castle whilst he and I were travelling 'First Class' (I can only dream of First Class now…hehe) to Telford (I was going for a short break at my mum's and Mr. Castle was attending a formal dinner as a guest speaker). One of the most genuine and funny gentlemen I have ever had the pleasure of meeting…I never let on I knew who he was and he never said "Don't you know who I am???" so we talked about everything except him, which I think he found a very enjoyable passing of time.

Allan…a quick question…What was Our Eli's real name?

And before I pop off again…What about Jimmy Clitheroe - Clitheroe most famous son and another class act.

Steve ... "She knows yer know" .... Our Eli's given name is beyond me at the moment.
Who was "The Cheeky Chappie", the only comedian to be banned by BBC steam ?.

Good Old Max "Now there's a funny thing" Miller

I again was lucky enough to see Roy Hudd re-enacting Max's work resplendent in full costume…and you can certainly see why at that time he was banned from the BBC with all his risque jokes.

Today, compared to the likes of Frankie Boyle…Max, probably would not be on the BBC but this time for not being risque enough

How times have changed!!!...as Max himself would say "There'll never be another"

I wont give you the real name for Old Eli yet…I'll leave it open for a while to see if anyone else can get it...hehe

Ah, The Clitheroe Kid - many fond memories of Sunday afternoons after Forces favourites on the radio!

Who was it said "where's me shirt?" I think it was his brother, but I could be wrong.

and have done the stage show "The Cheeky Chappie" I also have a great fondness for Max and his lovely double entendres!! My favourite (given where I'm currently living) is the one that ends "Is this Cockfosters?".

You do realise, Ladies and Gentlemen, that the vast majority of our readers will all be scratching their young, hirsute heads and saying "what the **** are this lot on about?"

Hay thank you!

Annie, I believe it was Jimmy's sister's brother but can't remeber the name, will have to google it. Can't recall too much of ITMA except what I've heard but grew up with Take It From Here, Billy Cotton, Archie Andrews and the great Kenneth Horne. Whatever happened to those 2 nice young men Jules and Sandy. Talking of Archie Andrews why did we never query a ventriloquist on the radio. But so many comedians/comic actors got their breaks on that show. My favourite catch phrase from that show was Bernard Breslaw "hello its me twinkle toes". A more innocent age?

Toni Brooks
Actor

It's true - I never heard ITMA but my my mum used to tell me about it.
Interesting but useless fact no 1:
The Old Theatre at the London School of Economics was used by ENSA during the second world war for rehearsals by people who went to entertain the troops - there's a plaque on the front of the stage. I can't remember which year it was but there was a concert put on by some of those people and there was one chap who did an amazing act with a lasso.

ITMA short for "It's That Man Again", and yes Toni .. we ALL believe you.
But your memory of ENSA brings back memories ... my very first Pro appearance ... now was that the 100 years war ... or .. the Boer War ?? not too certain ... I'll check out my medals.
Meantime .. no comeback on Dick Barton.
