Reality Bites!

Does anyone feel respected actors who appear on reality TV shows & frankly don't need the money or profile, are letting the side down a bit? (Especially if they crash out!!)

Ignore the reality shows and pick your way through the TV programming. Not a lot of good stuff on but we owe to it to ourselves to watch and know what's out there and how bad it is.
Working from the other side of camera it just makes me realise how much decent stuff is now going online whole heartedly- and with good reason!

Er....thanks for not posting my post last eve CCP!It wasn't that militant wasit??
I spent a good 40 mins typing it out when I could of been watching that 'jungle cockaraoch saga'but it wasn't screened last eve so I had to settle for 'Madmen' instead!
BTW, 'Downton Abbey' got 12 Million viewers per episode which is quite amazing in this age of fractured media channels & er reality TV!
It proves people would rather watch quality drama & acting afterall...

I knew the thread would drift in this manner!! So while I await my video editing prog to encode the latest master piece… I write the following…!

I think one is in danger of being a bit snobbish about these sorts of reality programmes. I can be entertained to an extent by some of them……not quite as enriching as Chekhov, or Madmen or whatever perhaps…..but no less entertaining than watching Shakespeare done very badly or self indulgently….quite often the case!! I've seen plenty of films TV dramas and plays at the National - the RSC, and on the fringe where "at times" I have screamed to myself….get me out of here!!!

If there is a market for Reality stuff…. and a place for it….why not? Is someone a worse person for watching one programme over another? I think its treading over dangerous ground to say or be overly judgemental: How can you watch this rubbish?…etc etc. I cannot bear Chris Moyals…….I think he is the ruin of Radio one as a music channel …..but others love him. Good for them…I just chose not to listen……though I did at least try….so I am entitled to make my judgement and choice….that's freedom and democracy at it's best huh?!

Corrie …v Eastenders….Soaps in general….any acting and drama …..its all so subjective and down to personal taste…..there is room for all of it I think.

Getting back onto the subject matter of the thread. Havers must have wanted his brains testing prior to his jungle experience I should have thought….I can see no reason other than a lot of cash offers….and perhaps the misapprehension that it may re-launch his TV acting career? Bad luck Nigel….WRONG I would think!!! On the other hand…maybe not?

The Jungle show is about desperate (a to c list Celebs) who have either under their own power and mind…..or who have been dupped and been very naïve or utterly desperate,…whatever… decided to take part……or perhaps none of those….and they have genuinely thought and wondered if they could endure the experience? Naively they forget that the TV show producers will be doing the controlling though, the participants are always on a hiding to nothing… the editing will make each person look and sound however the TV producers want!! We can watch this - with a degree of amused fascination - in my case from the safety of my Sofa….and see a human being subject themselves to this….and also to see how they deal with it accordingly. As an actor…I think you can actually gain quite a bit from observing human behaviour in the celeb Jungle and or Big Brother…….as long as you can avoid sticking your boot through the screen when it gets utterly inane and stupid!!! I suppose its no different to going to see a horror to be scared shitless….why? Answer….because we can!

Does it put actors out of work
………Hmmm…no I really do not think it does to be honest! What work would any of us get ……do you honestly think the TV execs will say….ahhh poor actors….lets make a lot of drama and film so that we can employ more of you? NOPE!!

Reality shows have simply replaced the endless and in some cases equally mindless…game shows that used to be on in the 70's and 80's. I do concede that TV Co's could make a bit more drama…..but it would not create many more jobs other than a handful perhaps….in comparison to the masses of us all looking for acting work.

Drama…..good quality drama and film costs millions to make…..end of…..TV CO's are run by accountants …..that's it!! As I say we could make a bit more more as good drama and film can be sold around the world for a profit……but it's a very hard profit and a very labour and intensive profit to try and make for TV.

The TV Co's know that Reality shows are by comparison much easier to make money from with all the sponsorship deals and branding deals made…..the sponsors know they will get a good return….as the vast majority of the viewers will be those who have the most spending power…..its simple economics really! Yes it might be a shame and sad….of even thought of as deplorable if you want to think of it in that way……but you come up with some drama which will gross the same sorts of profits and return for the TV Co's….and maintain or increase the profits and numbers of viewers…….then reality shows would be dropped like a stone.

I would say in the Film industry….we do lack a fair bit of imagination at government level. If that were sensibly subsidised …..the UK would lead the world and have a thriving film industry…..then there would some more work opportunities for us all perhaps…..but on TV….nah….I don't believe it!

Unfortunately the media is controlling all of us to a certain extent….I like to think I can make my own judgements still, but then I don't read the papers……….packed with utter lies in most cases…..I listen to good documentaries and or watch a lot of chat shows….question time etc……and I can just about form my opinion from that……but you really cannot trust anyone in power these days!! That to me is much more sad, and a far bigger worry than watching Reality progs! Even sadder is that these sorts of shows and or media power has opened the door for a few complete twats to make some large amounts of cash by having a career and being famous for nothing other than either Big tits or being a dummy and a pratt!! I think these sorts of people have always been in society, and who are we to judge them or look down on them…… they are famous because they get much more exposure these days. What is sad….there is a danger that some of them become role models for young kids to look up too…..now that really is sad. Good parenting usually can resolve that though!

I think the internet will change everything as it is demand driven.....I agree with Guy...this is the new hunting ground for drama and work opportunities for us over the coming years....and that will then start to make TV bosses think perhaps?

One can always reach for the little knob!! …Errrr….on the TV I mean!!!

Ahh encode finished and now I have to rush to a casting!! When I get back....I shall openly sit down and watch my recording of The Apprentice!

I thought it was great and left a comment to say so :) That last shot of you and the look you gave towards the ambulance was just magic, I thought. Your face just said so much but was beautifully measured - really lovely :) Nice that there were so many loose ends left for the viewer, too (what happened to the little boy in the phot, where will the man go from here...?) Lots more to still care about and ask questions about. Really enjoyed it! x

I think there's a group on Facebook who are deliberately voting for Wagner to make a mockery of the whole thing - I think it's the same group who stopped the X factor winner getting to number 1. More power to their elbow I say :-))

Now, were the results true to the votes or were there some shenanigans going on? Simon's quote along the lines that there had been some people trying to ruin the 'integrity' of the show but now the great British public have won - not the correct words but certainly the correct ethos - make me think it was a way to sabotage the saboteurs!

Anything's possible with that bloke!
I suspect some manipulation of the results went on & probably be published on 'Wikileaks' !!
