Student Films

I don't mind doing the odd student film for showreel footage (when they actually bother to send it....) but doing a job that isn't paying anything and then being asked to go out to them an audition for it, when I have a showreel....? Personally, I think it's a bit of an insult to ask people to give up what is potentially half a day to audition for an unpaid job, where they might or might not promise to send a copy and might or might not actually send it to you.

Am I being unreasonable, that I don't want to do this? For an unpaid student film?

Hi Claire, I have a policy of asking to read the script first, if the job is unpaid. If its a good script, a good part, and it looks like it will yield some interesting footage then I would consider making the journey. I think it's fair enough for them to want to see you, as some showreels can be out of date, i know what you mean, a zoom meeting would solve that problem, and wouldn't take half the day

Is anyone seeing my submissions?

I agree, that if you send in a showreel, they have a better idea of who you are and what you can deliver.
I find it worst of all, that they don't bother responding at all saying you do not meet their envisaged requirements, these students will grow up to be right ignorant pesants, like those at some casting agencies that "pencil" you in, and threaten to knock you off their list if you cancel late or are a no show, but then they cancel less than 8 hours before you are suppose to be there, and don't think about that you will need to rest early, so you are up for travelling to be there for the registration etc.

I can't blame Lena for asking "Is anyone seeing my submissions?", as these buggers never respond. I did have a recent response, and was floored. They had received my submission, but couldn't access my profile. No wonder we aren't getting any responses.

Here is a question to those who place the adverts for us actors. How are people supposed to get the experience they lack, if no one will give them the opportunity. If these student film makers and directors want to have the experience of making films without paying for our services, the least they can do, is reciprocate, by giving people like David Allum the chance to gain experience in the field that he is lacking.

Sorry you misunderstood my point. I am an experience background / walk on artist. My point was who needs direction about standing in a supermarkte queue

My apologies. You are quite right there. Some of these student directors/film makers are rather condescending in their adverts. Lack of etiquette and experience of our world. Then again, some of the biggest mistakes, have made the best scenes.

Back in the days when spotlights had bulbs instead of LEDs, which made the stage and studios very warm, my hands started to sweat so I slipped over the sofa during a wide angle take, as I had to exaggerate my movements, so they would be visible for the camera. They loved it, as the advert was suppose to have a hint of comedy. People used to wait for the adverts to come on again just to watch the advert. - Go figure.

Just like in "When Harry met Sally", an actress fakes an orgasm, and the extra was so stunned by the leads acting, that she forgot her lines, so that when the 'waiter' asked what she would like, she had to ad lib and said: "I'll have what she's having." - Screaming orgasm?
