To Nancy or not to Nancy...

I've been one of those who has been resoundly against these reality shows exploiting and encouraging the complete bypassing of the acting community in favour of some cheap television.
Now. Along comes a TV Talent Show (ie this Oliver thing) that has a part that I could actually play. Hmm. The shoe's on the other foot suddenly. I start to think, Mmm, I'm in the playing age... I can sing... how often, as an unrepresented actor, do I get a shot at a paid casing? And at least each time these shows have been on, they have given trained actors a decent job- the right person has got the gig.
The fact that I would rather pull my own teeth out than go to most musicals currently in the West End is neither here nor there!
At the and of the day, it's a way in, and I've tried the conventional route for the last 11 years, with limited success. Maybe my Mountview training might come in handy after all!
Is anyone else out there having dangerous thoughts like these? Encouragement or a slap round the face, please!

hi leanne,
its good to be back, thankyou! only got back a week ago. of course last time we spoke i was going off for a 6 month contract which actually turned out to be a 22 month contract so it worked out ok.
i have filled out my application form but i tried to email it to them like it says but got a automated email reply saying i was too late as they are now on the road so if i was applying for Manchester i was too late and to bring the form with me on the audition day.
it also says that if you have sent your application form to them beofre the deadline you are guarenteed to get seen. so does this mean now that i could go all that way and not be seen?? and also to my rant, it says NO WHERE!!!! on the form a deadline day to get the applications in by!!! Its all going wrong before i've even got there!

Sometimes it helps if you cry if they ask you for an interview. Or have a story like.. I was ill and never thought I'd sing/ dance again. My family are ashamed of my chosen career....

Or it that fails....

Sing really loud in the waiting room (maybe with a dance routine)

I'm half serious. Good luck.

Lee, as ever the resident sage!
Your concerns are exactly what my partner has been worried about these past couple of days, it has to be said.
These people can paint you however they want. I think also though, that the public have a pretty short memory for this sort of thing unless you're Jade Goody (and thank Christ there's only one of her)
I don't know. So much to think about. But hey- I've got to get through the auditions yet!
So have the London ones closed too? I sent mine off by post at the beginning of the week. I think I'd better bring a copy with me just in case, as it does say that you can just turn up with the form.

Well, my comments, looking back, do seem a bit...scare-mongering, maybe. And I appreciate the fact that these particular shows are as much about the performances as about 'behind the scenes' stuff. But, whilst I don't necessarily think that the experience of appearing in such a thing would leave you irrevocably scarred for life, I do think reality TV shows can be a pernicious thing.

My sister appeared, several years ago, as one of the maids in Channel 4's 'Edwardian Country House'. This, as far as I'm concerned, was the best type of 'reality show' (a high end market, with a real 'educational' purpose behind it), but she still found that, over two months, the cameras were never off, the relationships between the people in the house were deliberately engineered and manipulated, if you fell ill, you were hardly treated with much in the way of consideration, communication with the outside world was heavily circumscribed (she had to write the occasional letter home to us in pencil, in order to maintain the 'spirit of the thing', even though she was never filmed writing) and, at the end of it, several people were so traumatised by the whole thing that they had to take several months off to recover.

All I'm saying then, really, is not you shouldn't go for it...but you shouldn't go for it without a fair bit of mental preparation in place first.

Joy - it was only the 'olivers' that were guaranteed an audition by sending the form in, not for the 'Nancys'.

It had confused me too

I on the other hand have decided against it.

I couldn't let myself cue for hours on end with 1,000's of girls perhaps not getting seen at all and on top of that they would probably want me to sign something saying my family would be available to do little emotional video clips... errrr no, can't really see the Probyn's doing that.

To be honest I don't have a sad back story eg. "MY one legged mother with no face died last week and then so did my cat" type thing... I know these are sad things that have happened to people (Ok perhaps not EXACTLY that) but if I get a job I want it to be based on my talent alone. That and the fact that I'm a lovely person :P

I guess I feel I would be selling my soul to the devil a bit.......

*cut to me on Saturday queuing with rest of you when I have nothing better to do*

not really ;)

I was once worked with an Actress on a film and she told everyone that she would be appearing on a reality show, however once it was aired she was mortified with how the production company portrayed her.

She had to live through several months of this clip being aired against her will, she wasn't a happy Teddy and she made enquiries to Equity about what she could do about the situation but, it transpired that she had signed a release form.

A lesson learnt!!

I know where you're coming from on the whole family issue.
My partner thinks I'm completely nuts but my mum would love it!

While Im not a big fan of these Tv casting shows, its a reality that its the way MT is going, and its really sad.

If any of you ladies are planning to do it, be VERY careful what you say etc and be prepared for the off chance that you may be misrepresented and that even what you will do will be edited to mean something totally different.

Listen to those who have been on Maria and remember that what you see on TV isnt the truth, its edited TV.

If you are good, it will show, if you are bad, then you will be remembered.

It'll be a bit like "spot the actor" - whoever's got an Evian bottle! Like it.
I don't know what the best time to arrive would be. Everyone will want to be seen early I'd think and arrive about an hour before. (Or earlier!)Do you think the queue will be the same length if we arrived two hours later?
They said that they might overrun into the next day, which isn't possible for me (and a waste of my day if I don't get seen) so I really don't know what's best.
It's so long since I did an open! Wonder why??
