Useful Example Scripts

Richard Williams
Voice Over: English

Hi Folks,

I hope everyone is keeping well out there. In the spirit of sharing and caring, I thought I would share a really nice website that has some good example voice-over practice scripts that can be used in sound reels, etc.

Commercial Voiceover Scripts https://bit.ly/2RXBpku

Certainly worthy of a look if you are trying to grasp that inspiration. I really love this community and I think it's great that there is a forum where we can all share ideas and from this, I've learned quite a lot.

Keep well my friends

Cheers

Rich

Hi Rich, thanks for this info. I've been scratching my head trying to create some scripts for a new voice reel so this is brilliant. And you're right, this forum throws up some great tips and support. Have a great day.

Hi David,

Thank you for your very generous words and it's an absolute pleasure to share ideas.

It seems to be one of those industries where generally speaking people are very willing to help guide and share ideas which I find embracing.

Keep well and good luck with your new scripts.

Very best wishes

Rich

Voiceover Kickstart (which houses those scripts) is a fantastic, very reasonably-priced resource as a whole. Friendly and 'relatable'. A nice mixture of Pros and Newbies - and no ego games.

Particularly useful are the weekly Challenges in which a moderator puts up a script and people have a crack at it and get feedback.

Also there are frequent Live 'Rehearsal Room' sessions run by the founder, Guy Michaels, where you can work on stuff.

It comes really recommended by me (I have been a member for a few years).

I would also love to know what the ideal cover letter looks like. I tried to make every one individual although I'm definitely working off a main template which seems to be working.

Cover letters like all things can be simple and not so simple. I always try to create a cover letter with a little blank in it that I can add personal information if there is any. If you can connect with the client right from the cover letter, that's a great start.

My cover letter usually highlight my home studio equipment, my connection capabilities (ie: Source Connect, ipDTL, Zoom, etc). I my location with a time zone (many overseas clients out there). I also inform the client whether I am willing to travel to a studio should the need or opportunity arise. As lockdowns ease, more and more recordings are moving back to downtown. I let them know my recording schedule and any potential disruptions. No one likes it when you book a job and then are unavailable to record because of a previous engagement. If you are upfront, the client usually work around it.

If the rates are clearly stated in the brief, I will acknowledge them and further mention my rates on future jobs are negotiable. It is not advisable to put your actual rates on a cover letter in case you get locked into something that could have paid much more. Always be open to negotiate.

Near the end, I will inform the client that if another custom demo is required, they are welcome to get in touch and I will provide one usually same day at no additional charge. this is important for me, as some VO do charge for requested demos and I do not.

Finally I thank them for considering me and my demo, and provide a link to my website that has further demos and information.

I do a lot of copy and pasting, and if there are names of clients I can address, I add them in at the top. Again, like everything else in this business, not all cover letters have to be dull and boring or extremely business. If the demo is light and funny, consider a light and funny cover letter, still providing the necessary details. If it's for a funeral home? Deaden things a little.... did I go there? sure I did.

If the cover letter is 500 words or less like Backstage? Hello, insert equipment. location, and a thanks. If you can point someone to a personal website, all the better for lack of words.

Have fun storming the castle

Thanks Kasper

I feel that I'm heading in the right direction with these but I know that I can improve.

As always you are very generous with your time in sharing such informed and professional insights for those including me who are relatively new to this arena. Thanks again, we are very lucky.

In my business it's the usual thing that often "less is more" but similarly we are asking someone with a project, their reputation, money and their clients interests, to make a constructive decision to proceed, or not with our respective pitch.

Your thoughts have helped me have better direction with the Custom Letter

Wishing you all the best over the weekend

Thanks

Richard

Thanks Richard and thanks Kasper for that informative post. I was struggling to word my 'default' cover letter, and though I had put some of the points you mentioned, I know now I am missing others! I've been a VO for years but only just exploring the Mandy option as they offered a free trial :) Pleasantly surprised by the quality of jobs, so here's hoping it proves fruitful!

It's also so nice to see a community on here - a VO's life can be a lonely one sometimes!
