....The following details are a combination of personal opinion & information already within the public domain.
The real innovator & the real 'Prince' is the other Simon.
He & 'Nasty Nigel' kicked it all off in 2001 with 'Popstars'! Cowell was offered
one of the 'judges' roles & turned it down only to see the programme have high ratings & revenues from phone votes. He resolved to be on the next panel of 'judges' for phase 2 of this genre,'Pop Idol'in 2001/2 as 'Nasty Nigel' bowed out to concentrate on conquering the USA with the other Simon. 'Pop Idol' in the UK went ballistic again in ratings & revenues
& Cowell decided it was high time he started his own series format called
'X factor' & after much litigation,an out of court deal was reached with the other Simon & an agreement for the makers of 'Pop Idol' to concentrate wholely & solely on 'American Idol'& leave Cowell to take all the spoils from the UK with his 'X Factor'.
Cowell also negoitiated a deal to appear
on the 'judging panel' of 'American Idol'. This deal combination for all parties was for approx 5 years & has just come up for re-negotiation; Enter Mr Green;
He & Cowell are now aiming for domination in both Uk & USA markets;Cowell is expected to resign from 'AI'
& launch 'American X Factor' across the USA with Green's backing! They have apparently planned another venture to compete against the likes of 'Disney' & create what they hope is world media domination on several fronts.However, If it all goes 'the way of the pear', Green ends up with a bad day in the office where as Cowell will be 'cleaned out'(probably)
as one is worth approx 2 Billion & the other approx 139 Million respectively.

My own humble opinion is that Cowell is potentially taking on more than he can chew,Green will scratch the deal & 'Disney' will annihilate him,(Cowell)
in any event.

The other question ofcourse is whether the market/s on both sides of the Atlantic will stand for two similar show formats because 'Pop Idol' could well be back on terrestrial in the UK?

The other Simon has also substantially 'bigger pockets' than Cowell & is reputed to be worth well in excess of 500 million quid.

It should be interesting to watch & see who emerges as 'The King' of this genre & how much time remains in any event for this kind of show format as they compete for market share.
