Clive Dunn

Clive Dunn died today, aged 92.
He was the very first actor to make an impression on me - I was 8 years old, down from Yorkshire with my Gran, sitting in the stalls of the London Palladium for their panto. Something about a ship.
I remember it was a ship, because they were all on deck when it the story fell apart.
One by one the entire cast started laughing uncontrollably. To the 8 year old Liz it was bewildering, even alienating, like being back in the first term at boarding school, with everyone apart from me getting the joke. Clive Dunn was the only one who held it together. He went, firmly, right on with the story, until the performers he was speaking to had recovered. As far as I was concerned, he saved the day, and I remember thinking the 8 year old's equivalent of 'What a pro!'.
Thank you, Mr. Dunn, for all the pleasure you gave us, (and continue to give in those reruns of Dad's Army).
Ahhh dear old Clive Dunn!! He was a real star in every sense of the word. He opened a local Fete once….and was a true gent to everyone inc all the kids. A very warm person. I loved and still love Dads Army; each actor made those silly roles into magnificent crafted characters. The wonderful relationships between the characters were the same every week...same catch phrases with daft plots, no need for swearing and or any cruel humour....yet they had something totally unique. All played by a wonderful cast of proper character actors. Not many like that these days!
The actors might pass on but Corporal Jones along with the rest of the Warmington-on-Sea platoon will live on forever.

Clive: well no, actually it's Dunn, Clive Dunn.
St Peter: (looking up and smiling) then you are very welcome, come on in.
My first memory of him was in Bootsie and Snudge. Required viewing in the early sixties. I think he was only 40 but playing a fore runner of Corporal Jones. It is a show that has hardly been mentioned but had over 140 episodes. I have no idea if it would still considered funny.
That's lovely Nigel. So sad but I had no idea he was 92 - he always played much older characters and I always envisioned him as a younger man.

We have lost another gem and a gent
I also thought he was much younger as he always aged up for his characters.
I still enjoy the repeats. I missed so many TV shows back in the day because I was always working then and recorders were not readily available.
