Funding for future jobs ;- save the future !

ok folks , putting the cat amongst the pidgeons here we go .

it is common knowledge that govt. money for sport events/ olympics is currently going to be more than for the arts / performance grants / films ect in the near future , all have which has been warned of cuts .

time has come for payment by results , starting with football ;- given the disasterous perfomance of england in the world cup , i suggest the league/ fifa impose a 20% pay cut to the players and give it to the arts to fund future jobs in theatre , t.v and film .

why ? ;- because when our players turn up , they always put on a good show , get great scores , and bring home more of the trophies !!!

The only trouble with that is what on Earth will the Arts do with the thousands of millions of pounds that will be injected into them?
It will be a shock of megaton proportions!!
The greatest tourist attraction in Britain has always been the theatre and Arts productions. No one comes over from the continent to watch a football match.
But the return from Arts Productions is far higher than football in terms of general income because there are no actors I know who are on £150,000 A WEEK for their jobs.

Ha ...very nice idea Andrew! I'd like to see "our" agents take on Wayne Rooney's agent!

Mind you....there are certain actors in a few theatres - TV & film etc for which the footballers might say the same thing!

The payments for both top footballers and top actors as well as other high profile jobs, have gone through the roof to the detriment of the professions. Football clubs in particular, are on the verge of the biggest collective collapse ever…I hope it does not happen to the arts, nor anything else for that matter….but this new "unelected" government is quite determined to slash everything in their sight it seems?

joking aside, the arts needs to think in terms of attracting proper business sponsorship deals....which could and would generate large amounts of money.

Would be quite funny to see Hamlet turn around to see VODAFONE on his back, or Puck with VIRGIN AIRWAYS on his wings!

Bloody sure I'd want to wear it if I thought I would be on Wayne Rooney's weakly fee!

I agree footballers wages should be capped and also there should be a hierarchy in place which is dependent upon their performance.

But I doubt that they will be willing to give the extra money to the arts they will I think most likely put it in to grass routes projects or local community projects.

Hey Mark,

I'm sure it was a typo error but I thought Rooney's "weakly" fee rather amusing! I wish my weekly fee was that weak don't you? Tehe!

Ha Tamzin...I see what you mean about spelling it in that way! Too much looking out the window in English lessons always haunts me...!!

Alan: Perhaps I misunderstand your point, but I should have thought British football generates much more income than the Arts? You could build a theatre with the average top level transfer fee.

I do see the day in the near future when companies will want to support and promote the arts in return for more public profile. It's happening more and more on TV with individual programmes and of course radio....why not theatre in some way?

Something will have to change though....this latest Whitehall mob are going to cut funding dramatically! Theatres ...save one or two... have rarely ever stood on their own two feet. Maybe now they will have to think a bit more carefully on how they pay their actors, choice of shows, the standard of shows and who is cast!! As much as I don't want to see cuts.....perhaps this will be good for the arts in the long run?
