Making Friends

Corey Malone
Actor

I've been working professionally for almost a year now and I've struggled with the fast pace of London to make any solid friendships.

It gets a little lonely in the city, especially when you try to befriend people, but they only think you want a connection for a career, which may turn out to be a byproduct, but not a main goal.

I'm just wondering if there are areas that groups of performers reside. My friend is an animator and he says that there is a bar that all the animators go to. Anything like that for actors?

Hi Corey,

Have you heard of the Phoenix Artist Club down the West End? I've passed through a couple of times and although it's not my bag, some performers go there as far as I know:

Good luck, I totally sympathise as I'm sure others do too.

Best wishes,

Wow, thanks for the suggestions, guys! I've just come across this and The Phoenix Artist Club sounds great, I'm going to check it out.

Colin and Corey, are you going there some time soon? Also, do you know what their daytime space is like? I'm writing a project at the moment and it gets quite lonely at home, and the usual writers' groups I found are not actor-writers so The Phoenix Club sounds promising again.

And Corey - I totally feel for you, I've been going through the same struggle ever since I came to London 3 years ago. I haven't found a solution yet and was thinking maybe it's just me LOL

Hi Corey. I agree with the Phoenix Artist Club suggestion. It has a Monologue night on Mondays and a Musical Theatre night on Thursdays. Both free and professional artists get up to strut their stuff. Get in before 9pm as only members can enter after 9 but you can stay if you are already in.

Good luck.

Hey Corey,
nice one mate. Let's all go for a drink there after the Rangroot release, shall we? March/23rd!
The Phoenix Artist Club sounds really interesting.
I've moved here 2 years ago from Germany, and I agree, London isn't an easy city to make friends, not only for artists I suppose, hence the need of networking..
Cheers

Hi Corey, why not go along to Warren Rusher’s next monologue evening on the 8th of March at Theatre Delicatescent at Liverpool Street - its a good way to stretch yourself and meet some fellow actors for a pint afterwards - the workshops are free.
Heres the link to the eventbright listing -

Maybe see you at the next one.

Hi sorry Corey, the workshops are held in the Theatre Delicatessen - Deli Studios behind Liverpool Street Station - at 2 Finsbury Avenue (EC2M 2PA) Which is an old UBS office block with the Theatre Delicatessen bar to the left as you face the building - you enter via the bar and make your way upstairs to one of the studios. The bars pretty lively but usially people head off to one of the more traditional local pubs after the workshop.

Depends how social you are. If you're happy to rock up to a bar and just get stuck in, then go for it. I hate doing that, so would suggest meetups. A lot of actors groups on FB arrange to meet up regularly, or you could arrange one.

How's everyone doing? I just wanted to post and say thank you to everyone who is still selflessly sharing their talents with the world and to everyone trying to share their gifts with the world. During these times, with the quarantines and proverbial storm clouds that have been chilling above our heads will make it hard to put the same type of love into the world, but we represent the things that people cling onto in their most desperate, we hold a mirror to society and we demand and inspire change. Sometimes you might have to be a little cheesy but don't stop the fight, no matter what happens, I promise I have your back if you have mine. Have a great day reader ;)
