How to get started as a make-up artist
Makeup artistry has never been an easy industry to get into. But if you truly want it, your drive and determination will get you there. So how do you get started?
There are makeup artists all over the world, some who work in film, theater, fashion and much more. But no matter what field you want to work in, they all get started the same way. Practice.
Before you even think about studying makeup, the best thing you can do for yourself is practice. Practice on others, practice on yourself, whichever is best for you. There are certain things you can learn at college, but at the end of the day it is up to you to build up your skills and practice new techniques.
If you do decide you would like a qualification in makeup, choose a course that will most likely benefit you in the long run. If you want to stick to beauty or 'everyday' makeup, most beauty courses will teach a unit in this as well as other helpful things for a beautician to learn.
If you prefer high fashion, theater, special effects etc, a theatrical media makeup course would be appropriate. You will cover a wide range of units and learn so many things!
And last but definitely not least, get experience within the industry. When you're not studying, use websites such as Film and TV Pro to apply for work, get your portfolio and CV out there to employers!
You may have to start with unpaid work in the beginning, but as you get more experienced and advanced, you never know what opportunities will be available to you. Once you get your name out there and build a reputation for yourself, getting work becomes much easier.
This is how to get started as a makeup artist. I hope this article was helpful to you.
