How to overcome stage fright

When you are just about to go on stage do you feel butterflies in your tummy, queasy and do you hear your heart beat getting louder and louder in your head? Your hands feel a bit clammy and you start to feel that familiar panic beginning to set in? Then an internal negative voice starts telling you not to go through with it, to just go home, you can't do it?

Please don't worry, we have ALL been there at one time or another and it's something you CAN fix.

Overcoming stage fright is not easy though and even experienced performers can feel nervous at times. I think it's really important to understand that at some time or other, everybody (no matter how outwardly confidant) has felt the same things as you have and felt their nerves get the better of them.

A cool calm confident exterior might be what you see on the outside perhaps but inside it's important to remember even big stars have had butterflies in the seconds leading up to their performance. Those butterflies we feel inside us help both them and us to do our best, give us an edge and show that we really care about our performances.

You only have to look at behind the scenes documentaries of massive stars like Katy Perry, Madonna and Beyonce on tour to realize that just before they step out on stage even they feel it too.

But successful people haven't let it put them off performing and that is because they've learnt the skills to deal with it.

The most important thing is to not let it show to your audience and to keep true to your work. How can I do it you may ask? Well that comes from experience, making sure you are prepared, being well rehearsed and from remembering a few very easy tips that anyone can use to help them next time:

1. Be prepared. Know what you are going to do (your lines etc) inside out and it will help your confidence. You will naturally feel better if you know you have done your best. If you need to take anything on the day or expect the venue to have equipment you need when you get there - call them and check in advance that it's all organised so you don't have any surprises on the day.

2. Remember, everyone's rooting for you! This really is so important to know because nobody wants to see anyone fail and the audience are on your side and want to watch a great performance. Can you recall being in the audience watching someone who has forgotten their lines? It's awful and you want to help them out, right? So use that feeling and don't forget the audience is your friend and are willing you on to be a big success.

3. Practice really does makes perfect! It's a cliche but it's true and no matter how big or small the occasion rehearsing is key. Not only does it help your confidence immensely, the audience can tell if you're under rehearsed.

4. Do you have little rituals? I don't recommend wearing lucky pants or socks! But if it helps reciting a mantra or verse to your self is great or making sure you have your favorite things with you.

5. Take a deep breath and just go for it! You CAN do it. Just get out there, if you've learnt your lines and you've done your best to prepare, be brave and step forward!

6. Never let internal voices talk to you negatively. Put a stop to negative thoughts and think positively!
