He’s a man who has been very successful at his job even though he might have been propped up by family money when the going got tough, though he is a bit ashamed of that fact. Though, he does have charm and both scholarly and emotional intelligence. When we meet Oscar, he is in a seeming relationship with Sadie (post her break-up with JB out protagonist) and he wants her to move on without emotion. He does encourage her to sell the house as soon as possible, to throw JB out so he can stand on his own two. Oscar comes from a Nietzschean standpoint coupled with aspects of Ayn Rand - propping someone up doesn’t help anyone. While this is cold, Oscar does try to deliver this in a practical manner.Oscar tries to practice what he preaches, instead of focusing on the failures of Sadie’s life, he tries to direct her towards the future - where art is enjoyed but not created, that’s not a career, it’s a hobby. His main objective is to usher JB quietly out from Sadie’s life and even though this may spill over into violence, Oscar selfishly puts Sadie first over JB’s feelings.
