    Purpose The Flys Manager is to manage the day to day running of the Flys operations, assessing the needs and priorities of each production, managing and co-ordinating the Flying staff. He/she is to provide technical and management support for the Technical and Production Department and provide high quality flying and rigging services to the ENO and visiting companies during the preparation, and running of, rehearsals and performances at the London Coliseum, or at any other venue where the Company may perform.  Key Accountabilities General ·        To manage, in consultation with other ENO technical departments and/or any outside contractors, the effective day to day running of the operations, delegating shows, tasks and projects ensuring that the correct equipment or flying production elements are ready and in position prior to any fit-up, rehearsal or show.·        To work in conjunction with the Head of Stage Systems to record and manage all steel cables, other rigging related hardware held in stock, and to allocate these items to shows/events as necessary. ·        To assess daily or future technical constraints at ENO due to the scheduling of shows, recommending any technical modifications, show or schedule changes.·        To develop best practice within current industry standards for ensuring communication across both the Flys and wider show team during rehearsals and performances.·        To develop a working knowledge of the ENO productions in the repertory, understanding the technical and staffing implications of running these productions within the schedule.·        To be the direct contact in regard to flying effects for the Production Managers in regard to new/revival productions. To relay all information to the Technical Department Heads and Technical Manager, to resolve any technical or scheduling conflicts.·        To nominate a member of the Flys team to be on stage for all fit ups to ensure best practice and correct communication between the Stage and Flys personnel.·        To ensure that shows are consistently operated to the highest quality and safety standards, maintaining the standards set by the creative team.·        To organise and participate, as necessary, in planning, schedule, production, model and other Departmental meetings, ensuring that all the relevant information is distributed effectively. ·        To oversee the flying plot for the season created by the Drawing Office. Liaising with Production Managers and Technical Department Managers as necessary, suggesting changes and avoiding problems to ensure that builds, changeovers and get-outs occur as smoothly as possible.·        To develop correct procedures for flying each show ensuring that the agreed procedures are carried out and documented within the production show file.·        To oversee, and implement the hanging of chain hoists and other rigging, liaising with ENO Technical departments and outside contractors as necessary.·        To work in conjunction with the Head of Stage Systems to record and manage all motorised and manual chain hoists and Kinesys control system, ·        To ensure that the Head of Stage, Technical Director and production team, are kept informed of any flying or grid issues and changes to the fly plot that may affect their shows.·        To ensure that all time sheets, records, show information (weights of pieces, storage motors, etc) are maintained and up-to-date and added to the show file.·        To identify and maintain an inventory of all lifting and related equipment and accessories within the company.·        To identify and maintain an inventory of all soft hanging stock and any other flown related items within the company.·        To attend and actively participate in production, model and other Departmental meetings. Documentation ·        To produce risk assessments and method statements for lifting operations that are to be undertaken for all generic flying operations as well as “production or show” specific risk assessments and to ensure that these are regularly reviewed and kept updated.·        To ensure that full information relating to all flown and suspended elements of productions are recorded and readily accessible by all relevant parties.·        To develop and maintain instructional, induction and training documentation for lifting equipment operations. Staffing·        To set standards of professional flying and rigging skills and competence.·        To review in advance the staffing levels required for each allocated crew call and inform the Head of Stage and Technical Resources Manager of any issues.·        To monitor and record attendance of Technicians against the schedule drawn up by the Flys manager or Head of Stage and report on any lateness/absence and arrange for cover staff as required.·        To step in and work the fly rail in the event of unexpected staff absence or emergency.·        To deal with assessments and disciplinary matters with Flys personnel.·        To work with the Head of Stage and Technical Manager, in assessing any Stage Technician’s skills relevant to the job they are being asked to do i.e. work at height and to visually inspect any relevant skills certificates they may have.·        To give technical advice and instructions to staff as necessary, to help develop their skills and suggest any training that may seem appropriate.·        To provide any relevant information to the Head of Stage and Technical Manager regarding the continual assessment of the performance of individual Technicians. This is part of the annual appraisal system which the Technical Manger will carry out.·        To ensure that discipline is maintained and where necessary the Head of Stage is advised of any matters requiring the disciplinary process. Financial·        To be aware of budgetary constraints regarding shows and to keep the Technical Director  informed if these limits are close to being met. Planning·        To plan and organise the preparation, operation, storage, running repairs and maintenance for all Flys related elements of production.·        To participate in the long term planning/maintenance of the Fly system to co-ordinate with the Technical Manager and Head of Stage Systems and Building Maintenance as to how maintenance is implemented within the season schedule.Health & Safety·        To ensure the provision of a safe working environment, adhering to the Company’s Health & Safety policy at all times.·        . Have successfully completed and hold an IOSHE managing accreditation·        Ideally be trained to PLASA National Rigging Certificate (NRC) at level 2 or level 3 or a similar recognised certificate.·        To ensure that managers and staff fully understand their health and safety responsibilities and are adequately trained and fully competent to put them into practice.·        To ensure the maintenance of a structured risk assessment programme in the Production Department, in particular in relation to show risk assessment procedure.·        To ensure the implementation of formal safe working practices identified by risk assessment.·        To participate in the discussion and production of documents relating to health and safety.·        To produce risk assessments, method statements and be aware of current health and safety legislation as it relates to the entertainment industry.·        Ensure that all Stage activities are carried out in a safe manner in line with the Company Health & Safety policy.·        To carry out risk assessments, work out safe working practices and procedures and ensure this information is passed on to staff who will have to work to them.·        To liaise with the Head of Stage Systems and Building Maintenance in regard to all used areas and flying equipment.·        To be up to date with, and ensure that all codes of practice and other appropriate legislation is adhered to at all times.Other·        To carry out any other duties relevant to the post.   Additional Information: ConfidentialityAll information concerning staff, patrons, productions and other ENO business, the disclosure of which could be detrimental to the company, must be held in the strictest confidence and may not be divulged to any unauthorised person at any time. A breach of confidentiality will result in disciplinary action being taken in accordance with ENO’s disciplinary procedure and may lead to dismissal.Data protectionComputer information should only be accessed if this has been authorised and is necessary as part of the postholder’s work.  Unauthorised access to computer data or helping others to access such data will result inaction being taken in accordance with ENO’s disciplinary procedure and may lead to dismissal. The postholder’s attention is also drawn to the Data Protection Act 1984 and the Computer Misuse Act 1990.Health and SafetyThe postholder has personal responsibility for safety as outlined in the safety policy and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.Equal OpportunitiesThe postholder will be required to abide by ENO’s policies on Equal Opportunities.Code of ConductThe postholder will be required to act in accordance with ENO’s Code of Conduct whereby everyone shall be treated in a professional and courteous manner and with full regard to the avoidance of sex, race and disability discrimination, consistent with current equal opportunities employment legislation.PERSON SPECIFICATION  Qualifications/Experience: ·     At least two years experience in a supervisory position in a large scale repertory house·     At least three years experience in a supervisory position in the specifics of flying theatrical effects·     At least five years Stage operational experience in large scale repertory·     Excellent stage craft skills and ability to work at height using access equipment and PPE such as ladders and work positioning equipment·     Excellent working knowledge and experience of counterweight rigging systems·     Excellent working and programming knowledge of the Nomad controls system for flying effects·     Excellent skills in the setup, operation, & maintenance of chain motors·     Excellent team supervision skills including guidance, delegation of tasks and informal practical training of Technicians·     If applicable, recognised certificates in rigging, stage craft, health and safety and electrical awareness Key skills: ·     Ability to read and interpret Stage plans and sections as well as production element break-ups·     Ability to document changes to all paperwork forms during an evolving revival/non production in a clear and efficient manner·     Above average use of PC programs including Microsoft Word, Excel Personal qualities: ·     An open mind to new ways of working·     Sympathetic approach to people working under pressure in an artistic environment·     Excellent communication skills; written and verbal·     Self motivated, pro-active with the ability to motivate others·     Ability to maintain a positive attitude through high stress situations·     Excellent time management skills with the ability to provide input in regard to scheduling of the Stage space and personnel Attachments:
