    Purpose of JobThe Head of Production and Premises (HoPP) is a member of the Donmar’s Senior Management Team and is the first point of contact for enquiries to the production department, overseeing the efficient day-to-day operation, management, maintenance and development of all aspects of the Donmar’s buildings and storage facilities. They will:• Production manage two Donmar productions per year• Lead on all Health & Safety (H&S) matters across both buildings (Dryden St and Earlham St) and the wider organisation• Support freelance production managers, advising them of the facilities and resources available at Donmar Theatre.• Be responsible for line managing the production departmentResponsibilitiesStaffing• Line-manage the in house technical staff, including the approval of accurate timesheets within budget• Ensure training needs of production staff are met and reviewed as appropriate, especially with respect to H&S regulations• Lead regular team meetings, ensuring the team is kept informed of artistic planning and other Donmar activity• Ensure that current Donmar, union, and employment working practices are adhered, referring to the BECTU house agreement where required• Ensure the safety and wellbeing of all technical staff, and those that have dealings with the department, by complying with statutory and company H&S regulationsHealth & Safety• Act as the H&S lead, implementing proper practices and adhering to in-house H&S policy and general H&S regulations across both buildings; working with the Operations Manager (OM) and Head of Audience Experience (HoAE) to develop policy and best practice• Be responsible for liaising with statutory bodies in regard to H&S, including the local authorities (Camden and Westminster), and ensuring CDM regulations and processes are upheld during all fit ups and technical rehearsal periods• Ensure all production-related work is safe, complying with current entertainments licensing, fire, building and H&S legislation• Ensure all equipment and processes are regularly audited and fit for purpose, and that regular insurance inspections are carried out• Identify hazards and complete suitable risk assessments for all production-related activities• Work with visiting Production Managers to ensure risk assessments are completed for all productions within the building, including CDM compliance• Ensure all H&S maintenance and training records relevant to the department are completed and communicated to staff• Chair the internal H&S working group and ensure progress of relevant actions and decisions• With the HoAE, ensure the H&S of audiences and other members of the public that visit the theatre• Manage and oversee arrangements for the fire strategy in both buildings, including fire evacuation, fire detectionProduction Management• Act as Production Manager for 2 Donmar productions per year• Facilitate and oversee the technical staging requirements for each allocated production, as required by the creative team, within budgetary and other parameters• Liaise with and support the creative teams; to draw up plans, budgets and schedules to realise the productions; to arrange for the construction, purchase and/or hire of all design elements; to provide expertise and specialist technical help to the creative team as required.• Lead production meetings, attend rehearsals when appropriate, and oversee technical rehearsals, get-ins, get-outs and performances as required• Report to the Producer and the Finance department on expenditure on relevant budget linesProductions and Other Activity• Liaise with freelance Production Managers on realising all technical aspects of productions and ensure they have all relevant technical information• Oversee HoD’s to schedule and recruit casual staff for productions• Oversee the Technical Assistant (TA) in supporting the Stage Managers in carrying out their duties• Ensure all backstage areas are kept tidy and maintained in an appropriate manner• Work with relevant team members to deliver all technical aspects of ad hoc events, such as fundraising galas and festivals• Where necessary, attend production fit-upsBuildings and Facilities• Supervise the OM to oversee maintenance contracts for the building, monitoring performance, safety, and effectiveness, and tendering periodically as required• Set and monitor budgets for the various areas of the building with the Director of Finance, reporting any areas of concern as they arise• Oversee the Head of Lighting to ensure PAT testing takes place in the theatre• Work with and advise the HoAE on front of house building contracts and issues• Be responsible for all on- and off-site storage• Supervise the OM to manage the cleaning contract/staff, ensuring good housekeeping throughout both buildings• Advise on medium- and long-term building and technical requirements which may need substantial investment, allowing a reasonable lead time for any fundraising requirements• Oversee the HoAE and OM to implement and review all operational procedures, including opening-up/closing, fire strategy, first aid, security, pest control, cleaning and housekeeping• Oversee the HoD’s to create and carry out a schedule of maintenance for all stock lighting and stage equipmentSustainability• Oversee the OM to lead on the Donmar’s Environmental Policy, including the review and implementation of the Sustainability Action Plan, ensuring the Donmar continues to work sustainably, striving to reduce energy consumption throughout both buildings and across the organisation• Consider how the production department’s activities impact sustainability and implement improvements to reduce environmental impacts• Promote active involvement in industry-wide and local initiatives around sustainability, including those introduced by ACE, Julie’s Bicycle, the LTC and local councils• Work with the OM and Finance team to monitor the theatre’s environmental impact and upload data through the Industry Green Production toolGeneral• Oversee annual and strategic production department expenditure, ensuring it is within the annual budget• Attend regular meetings including in relation to season planning, H&S, and other operational meetings as required• Keep appraised of developments in technical theatre and production practices; advise and implement changes as necessary• Act as a lead keyholder for both buildings• Be available for call-out outside normal opening hours during production periods and in emergency situations• Represent the Donmar at events where necessary• Support other departments when and where necessaryThis is not an exhaustive list of duties and the Donmar may, at any time, allocate other tasks which are of a similar nature or level.
