  • Project Details
A Beautiful Exit is a narrative short film that follows the deterioration of a young British Pakistani man named Yusuf. Struggling in his night shift-based customer service role at a call centre, Yusuf is becoming increasingly doubtful of his ability to progress in society and his acceptance into society. With customers questioning his legitimacy as a British citizen and right to hold his job, he has begun to resent his position and the public to whom he speaks every day.Upon returning home from a laborious and infuriating shift at work, he winds down through monotonous twentieth century hobbies stuck in front of a television and reclusively taking his dinner alone in his bedroom. When his brother Hamzah returns home bloody and beaten, the victim of a racially motivated assault, Yusuf begins to look for a way out of the cycle of monotony and insignificance he finds himself in.After tending to his brother recovering at home, Yusuf notices a leaflet advertising a Far-Right Rally stuffed in his brother’s jacket. Yusuf becomes increasingly perturbed by the discovery of this document and after an outburst at work, quits his job. Concluding that Hamzah’s attackers were a member of this Far-Right group, Yusuf prepares to attend the rally and have his revenge.A Beautiful Exit’s story is underpinned by a simplistic revenge plot. The deeper narrative of the film chronicles, over a short period of time, the manifestation of resentment and anger towards a nation. Feeling like he doesn’t belong, Yusuf is fueled primarily by his urge to bring his pain to a conclusion. This ‘pain’ isn’t necessarily a physical affliction, but more a psychological state of mind and feeling of claustrophobia. This film is a story about a young man looking for a way out. This ‘beautiful’ exit - an act of cathartic revenge or rebellion - framed within a religious or cultural context can be viewed through a religious and/or cultural lens. And it is this reflection that I hope will allow audiences to ask questions about our society and the viewpoints of ethnic minorities in the UK.Key CreativesShahid Malik: Shahid Malik is the British-Pakistani London-based Writer-Director of A Beautiful Exit.
