Urban public space has become increasingly colonised by corporations, with malls, shopping centres, arcades and transport hubs being owned by private interests with their own contracted security and surveillance. In this landscape there is an unease around young people taking up public space - to experiment, play, rest together and build social bonds with their peers. Play becomes a risky and subversive act.We are creating a company of 10 young acrobats and dancers from a range of ethnic backgrounds to reflect England’s diversity. The company will have a range of movement styles: acrobatic flow, parkour, as well as breakdance, folk and contemporary. The company will move through the architecture of streets and buildings, lifting each other over and around walls and stairs, climbing lampposts and street furniture. The movement will be seeded in images of support and freedom, tenderness for each other, empathy and the ability to be uninhibited and unbound.Public is a partnership project with National Centre for Circus Arts and Circomedia, funded by Arts Council England
