About me
I am primarily known as a banjo player and have been nominated for Musician of the Year at the BBC Folk Awards and have five critically acclaimed solo albums. I am also a singer, songwriter and guitarist. I have toured extensively throughout the world - in the UK, the USA, Canada, New Zealand, India, Germany, Norway and many other countries playing venues ranging from small folk clubs to 10,000 capacity fields at festivals. The bulk of my touring is now either solo or with my band the Urban Folk Quartet but I also collaborate with other musicians frequently. In the last two years I have appeared on stage or in the studio with Imelda May, Ward Thomas, Joss Stone, the Levellers, City of London Sinfonia, John Dowling, Meaghan Blanchard and Alistair Anderson.I am a quick learner - for example I recently participated in 'A Night of Country' at London Roundhouse where I was part of an 18 piece band and learned 40 songs in four days before performing them live with no music! I enjoy playing the banjo in many different styles of music but specialise in folk, bluegrass, rock, pop, country and funk. On guitar, I spent three years in a university jazz orchestra so can also read charts for jazz gigs and improvise solos.
