About me
Robin Dewhurst has developed an international reputation for his work as a composer/arranger, musical director, performer and educator. He has been professionally active in film, television, radio, theatre and concert music and has worked with some of the finest professional soloists and ensembles in their specialist areas of expertise.His diversity as a composer-arranger has brought him acclaim in a wide range of idioms, and he has received commissions from many named artists (Lisa Stansfield, Paul Young), ensembles (Hallé Orchestra, Manchester Camerata, Black Dyke Band, Bands of Her Majesty's Royal Marines, BBC Radio Big Band ), and media clients (BBC, Granada, Yorkshire TV and Channel 4). His choral and band works, published variously by Max Music, Gramercy Music, Big Bands Limited (UK), Lake Music (NL) and WoodBrass (SA) are in demand internationally and receive regular concert performances, recordings and broadcasts.
He has worked regularly in studio sessions as performer, composer/arranger and musical director whilst undertaking recording projects, television broadcasts and live concert series featuring soloists including Lisa Stansfield, Paul Young, Ronnie Scott, Kenny Baker, Don Lusher and Tommy Whittle, Bryn Terfel, Martin Taylor, Georgie Fame, Andy Prior, Wycliffe Gordon, Jens Lindemann and James Morrison.
In demand as an external consultant for many HE institutions across the UK, he is currently External Examiner for the University of Chester. Recipient of the Marty Paitch Arranging Prize (BBC Radio Big Band Competition), Robin completed a Masters degree with distinction, under the supervision of composer Gavin Bryars, exploring the music of Gil Evans. He gained a Doctorate in Musical Arts in 2006 and, in 2007, was appointed Honorary Music Advisor to Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Band Service, a prestigious role last occupied by SIr Malcolm Arnold. He is Composer in Residence for Stavanger Band (Norway) and, for many years, has been actively engaged as a Senior Lecturer in Music and Head of Jazz and Popular Music Performance and Programme Director for the DMA at the University of Salford, England.
Robin is married to Jan, has two children, Beth and Josh, and lives in Stockport, Cheshire.
